THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, MAY 17, 1907,
An illustration of the difficulties attending progress and settlement in Kawbift consequent on the lock up of na- | tive held land is the case of Mr A. Wright. Mr Wright for some time past has been negotiating with various native owners for some sice on which to erect a sash and door factory, yet from the miles and miles of water frontage in the harbour he has not been able to deal for a suitable site of two acres on which to put hig plant. Ho brought his troubles under the notice of some of our townspeople, who at once took the matter up. They ' saw the importance of having an industry such as this established in our midst—hundreds of pounds are sent lr.ro Kawbia for the purchase of planed timber, mouldings, doors, etc. Such a factory would give a fillip to the sawmilling industry, encourage | building by residents and increase our settled population. Mr Wright was taken over the foreshore of the township that- is now a reserve of the Harbour Board, and was shown that with a moderate expenditure, estimated at £250, spent in reclamation, a good site Ciuld be obtained. Mr Wright expressed himself as being pleased with the position and willing to negotiate. The matter will at once be brought before the Harbour Board, and it is hoped that no difficulties will be found in granting a provisional lease, to be Oonii.med when they arc fully in fasted with Harbour Board powers,
