SPECLLL MEETING. r A special meeting of the above was held on Montlay, 6th, when there were present—Messrs W. J. Shaw (chairman), G. G. Jonathan, H. Bhaw, H- Arsnatrong and W. W. M‘Cardle. The minutes of tbe last meeting were read and confirmed. - &£ Tbe business was tbe passing of ’pecial orders tor the raising of loans far tbe Okupata and Pirongia West roods, which was done on the motion of Ora Armstrong and H. Shaw.
ORDINARY MEETING. An application from Mr P. Brough for the position of roadman at Oparau was held over. Leave of absence was granted to Cr. Babbage on account of ill-health. A letter was read from the Chairman of the Waitomo County Council re the proposal to hold a conference of delegates to interview the Minister of Public Works on the question of roads. As it was uncertain when the Hon. Hall Jones would be in the King Country he suggested that the delegates should proceed to Wellington.— Cr M*Cardle said it was desirable that a delegate should go to Wellington. The last time that the Council sent a deputation the auditor objected to tbe payment of the expenses. He could no see why tbe objection wm made, bu fancied it was because tbe business of tbe deputation was in con nection with the Harbour Board.—The Clerk remarked that tbe auditor said that the expenses of tbe chair man to Wellington wae all right, but that it was not legal to pay a councillors expenses.—Cr M*Cardie : In other councils they vote the chairman a small salary to cover these expenses. It is also usual that expenses incurred in the bringing into operation of a county should be voted, but in the case of tbe Kawhia County this was not done, and the expense fell almost entirely on myself. 1 think the chairman should attend this conference.—The Chairman also thought that it was necessary to send a delegate.—Cr M'Cardle said that he would be in Wellington at that time and would act with the confer ence.—Cr Jonathan : The expense will be heavy. Could not Cr M‘oardle act alone ?—Cr said that it would be well for the chairman to attend, as he (the speaker) might be more useful in another capacity. It was always best to send tbe obc.irman to a conference, as it proved that the Blitters brought forward were of great importance. It was also likely Shat there would be a general county conference in Wellington about the same *time.—lt was resolved that the Chairman and Cr M'Cardle represent tbe Kawhia County at tbe conference. The Manager of tbe Bank of New Zealand, Te Awamutu, forwarded a resolution re the account.—The motion, which was purely formal, was carried.
Au intimation was received from tbe Lands and Survey Office, Auckland, that £269 6s 6d, thirds due to April 25tb, 1907, had bean paid into the County’s account,—-The Chairman remarked that there were more thirds due than the amount paid in.—Cr M'C-irdle said that the Te Kauri riding had not spent or received its thirds. He had written to some of 'he ratepayers asking where they would like tbe spent, but had not received answers. Unless the thirds were applied for within two years they would be handed over to the Roads Department to expend.—The Chairman stated that he had been informed by a Te Kauri ratepayer that they did not intend to expend their thirds.— The Clerk was instructed to again apply for all thirds due to iihe county. It was decided to order drain pipes for works at Oparau and Kawhia (in front of Jonathan’s and Campbell’s). ACCOUNTS. The following accounts were passed for paymentJ. J. Woolly £5 2s, H.
