Oparau.

(FROM OCR O’ ’ CORBK6PONDBNT.) A petition too Government re thr Oknpatß bii'lg-' has been signed here. Tbe work baa not been done yes although the money was pat on last year’s eat:mates. A very L. .curable letter was sent to an Opurau settler by the Hon. HallJone.- r - J railway to Kawbia Har bour, and another on the certainty of the Native Land Commission getting some solid results beneficial to settlement from tbo Hon. R. M’Nab. Tbe Minister for Public Works has promised to favourably consider the Ferry bridge when the next estimates are bfing framed. Sheep aro fast ousting cattle and are doing extremely well. This stock will return more than cattle, and if prices hold almost as much as cows and dairying, without tbe night and day work of “ cow-spanking.” Two vnterpri-ing re tilers have built a residence for the schoolmistress, asking fur no rcwaid, doing the work merely to help the district. Such conduct appears to advantage, and also ehows the education laws in an adverse way. Small back-block places should receive every consideration. Some settlers are always looking for lost cattle. What is the reason ? Are their fences bad ? or do they leave gates open ? Cattle fences are being made sbeep-pr-.'of, tbe prices asked for this work being double to those ruling in Otago or Canterbury for the same Work. In spite of all the meetings held, reeolutions pushed and tenders called, eo far no return has been received fur rales paid. A note appeared in your pape< ieintivv to the rates coming in very slowly. I expect ratepayers object 'o pay and get nothing done.
