The next of the New Zetland Shipping Co.’s boats to leave tbe Waitara Roadstead will be tbu s.s Opawa on or about April 3rd. According to tbe Eltham Argus, Mr C. A. Wilkinson, a prominent resident of that town, will be a candidate for the Egmont seat at the next election. A splendid canos, measuring 75ft. in length, was towned from Marokopa to Kawhia by the s.s. Rothesay on Wednesday, and shipped by the Kia Ora to Ooehunga oei Wednesday. The canoe is a present from the Marokopa natives to the Waikatos.

Although it is some time since iho telephone to Kinobaka was completed the office has not yet been opened, and this fact has been the cause of much annoyance and expense to settlers. Since our last issue the doctor’s services have been needed four times and on two of these oocmiobs joarnoys have had to been made to Te Maika to use the ’phone. Sach a state of affaire is deplorable.

News was received in Kawhia Ou Thursday of the death of Mr Thomas Phillips, which sad event occurred at Gisborne, the cause being fracture of the skull, which wan due to being thrown from a horae whilst endea voaring to jump a gate. Deceased Was well known and highly respected in this district, and the sorrowing relatives have nnivoraal sympathy in their sad bereavement.

A young bull sixteen months old and landed in Buenos Ayres at a cost of J 64000 was ordered to be slaughtered by tbe sanitary authorities, presumably owing to some defect, but this did not deter tbe owner and a large number of friends from assembling to dine on tbe meat which was estimated to cost eight guineas per lb. The meat was tender and sweet and declared to be the finest ever .sampled in the Argentine—Buj nos Ayres “ Btundard, 11th November.

Mr Laird, the Superintendent of Engineers of the Northern S.S. Co., visited Kawhia thia week to inspect tbe a.'S. Rothesay.
