Te Rau-a-moa.
On Friday last a large number of people attended tbe annual school picnic which was held on the township reserve, not far from the school ground. A charming day added much to the enjoyment of the occasion. The refreshments were provided by tho ladies of tbe settlement, and the mere mention .that they had this most necessary undertaking in hand is sufficient guarantee of the quality, which was excellent to a degree. The events of tbe day were numerous and amusing. .Considerable excitement was caused by the boys ’ chop, and the result was as follows :—Boys under 12 Norman Franklin (serch.) 1, Taka 10 secs- 2; eizs of block 6 inches. Handicap chop for boys under 16: Harold Franklin, 1, won easily; size of block, 8 inches. Undoubtedly the boys gave a very good .exhibition of axsmensbip and some of .them will no doubt one day be numbered among the champion axemen of tbe King Country. Three of our local axemen hold a challenge chop for a wager of 10s a side. Tbe match resulted in a win for F. Smith, who gave a very good account of himself, and defeated both bis opponents. To wind up the day a very enjoyable dance was held in the schoolhout--dur-ing the evening. The floor was packed with gay young people whese beaming countenances and merry laugh bore evidence of true enjoyment and cordial friendship. During the evening several songs were giyen by our local talent and the andience was very appreciative Master Jack Coe's ‘rendering of the •* Spider and the Fly " was quite a revelation, & .showed ability .decidedly above the average. Mr Houore sang “ Mast Mast ’’ and was heartily encored. One very pleasing little item on the programme was tbe presentation of a handsome gold and greenstone brooch to Miis A. Armstrong, who won this trophy in the single ladies' race at our local sports some time ago. The music for the dance was ably supplied by Messers Houore, flute, W. Coe, cornet, and Dash, accordeon.—Waikato Times.
