THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, MARCH 8, 1907, THE COUNTY RATE.
At bbe late County Council meeting when the question of finance was under discussion, it was pointed out by the chairman that the non-payment of rates by ratepayers by the end of the financial year, viz., the 31st March, meant a serious loss to the County. Ou all rates paid before that lime the Government grant a subsidy of lOfe in the £. Last year it is estimated that had the rates been promptly paid the County Would have received additional subsidy to the amount of nearly £lOO. The sum to be paid individually is small, and it is not that ratepayers cannot pay, but as a rule it is through thoughtlessness or carelessness. It was suggested at the meeting referred to that if the attention of the public wore drawn to this matter and the position widely made known many would make an effort to help ths County get all the subsidy possible. We hope the publicity we willingly give will have the desired effect; it should be enough for us to say that under the circumstances the prompt payment of rates becomes a public duty.
