We are pleased to notice the first eousigumeat of timber being shipped from Kawhia to New Plymouth by the s.s. Kia Ora on Wednesday. At Kiritehere on Thursday, Constable M‘Cartfay arrested John Bluett on a charge of unlawfully carnally knowing a girl tender the age of 12 years. Mr Jenkins, chairman of directors of the Marokopa Milling Co., was a passenger by the Kia Ora on Friday morning from Waitara on a business trip. Make sure of gathering yonr potato crops by spraying the plants with Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. It is the surest safeguard you can have against blight.
It order to save further disputes Walter Morgan requests that persons wishing to travel by the mail launch notify him oil that fact the day previous.* The exports from Kawhia are increasing. The Kia Ora took away on Friday fungus, wool, hides, seven tons flax, 88 boxes butter (26 from Te Kau-a-moa). Persons who require a first-class piano on very easy terms are advised to read the new advertisement of the Loudor and Berlin Piano Co. on our back page.* The prizes won by the children of the Kawhia Congregational Church are to be presented at a social to be held in the church in about a fortnight’s time.
We have been shown some splendid tomatoes, growing in Mr A. F. Wilson’s garden at Kawhia, some of the plants yielding aa many as 60 tomatoes, averaging 7oza. each. When sampled the fruit (or is it a vegetable?) proved .to be of delicious flavour. Last Saturday a cricket match was played at Kawhia between the home team and Kinobaku, and after a very exciting match the game resulted in a tic, oach side scoring the same number of runs. The scoring book having been mislaid we are unable to give the full scores. Seven years experience has proved every claim ms.de for Sharland’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In all that time not one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out. It simply cannot fail.,. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. Bee that the name is on the laoel.* We learn that a small black 'caterfillar has attacked the ragwort at Te Rau-a-moa, which is being badly (or splendidly) effected. Au officer of the Stock Department has secured samples of both the weed and caterpillar which will be submitted to the authorities in Wellington. Tuesday’s steamer from Onehunga brought one of the largest cargoes that has ever been brought to this port. Besides general goods, three prize rams were labeled for Mr W. J. Shaw, of Kinohaku, and ail oil launch (30ft. long, 6ft,_6in. beam, With a h.p. engine) for the Marokopa Milling Co.
On Thursday last Mr Parkinson, of Te Rau-a-moa, suffered rather a serious loss—not so much from a monetary pointy but on account of the iinconveuience. Mr Parkinson drove liie pair of bullocks attached to a dray to the ferry, and tied them up whilst he proceeded to the store, but whilst be was away the animals moved and fell over each other, the bullock underneath being choked. You have soaked your sood in Sharland’s Potato Blight Extrkminator and your plants are now looking well. Keep them well by sprftying with the same solution.* About 60 residents of the district assembled in Scott’s Hall on Friday night last at a social tendered to Mrs Langley prior to her departure for Auckland. The hall bad been decoorated for the occasion, the stage especially’being very pretty/ Thia was the work of the ladies, who conducted the gathering in a creditable manneir. Tho guest was received on the stage, Mr Mason, J,F., making a few appropriati remarks and presenting Mrs Langley with a purse of sovereign.'!. Mr E. C. Falwasser suitably responded on behalf of the reoepient. Dancing was indulged in, the music being supplied by Mrs M'Uarthy (assisted by Mra Langley, Dr Jenkins and Master M'Uarlhy), Mr E. Falwasser being M.C. Jeongs were also delivered by Mr Bate and Mr Tita Wetere. The ladies supplied an excellent supper, which wa- 1 banded round about mid night.
