THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, FEBRUARY 22, 1907, Local and General.
It ia Air Wesley Spragg’a intention to make a tour of iho King Country shortly iu connection with t-ho butter industry. The stock (rack from the plateau to Wxi'.etnua (in Kawhia Courty) is pruning of great convenience to tho ■ct<•.•!> in (he Pakoka district. A rlodk of sheep was recently taken ••hrf-ugh by Mr Norton, thus saving irk ten or twelve miles. The Roads Department has now formed the now g’lide right into tbe bush. The executive committiee of tho Pirongia Axemen's Carnival met on Wi inecdey. Tho date of the Carnival wiih fixed for March 20th- Messrs VV.M,Howe and T.B Scott were appmuted handicappers for the chopping • vents, and Mr W.M.Chappell, handicapper for the fl it races. The seore•nry reported that Air French, of Greenwood, will allow tbe blocks to he Ulten from his bush. Mr H. Ct.e baa donated a special pritn for tho “duffers” chop, and Mrs Coe a apcinal prize fur tho boy** race under lixtufcn years. Spray, spray again, and still spray your potato plants wiih Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. It may be a lit le trouble, bi* •» *ill pay you when you come to dig , >ur crops,
Tbe telephone office at Te Malka declared open for business on Thursday. The section at Kinobaku, ballotted for last week, was drawn by Mr H. Ellmers. There wore 18 applicants. The attention of farmers is directed to Messrs Jenkins, Mathews and Piggot’s (Waitara) new advt. on our third page. The local firm of Newton and Armstrong has been dissolved. In another column Mr Newton has an an nouncement. The natives of Mahoy and are combining to run a race meeiing 4 - to be held on Motu Island about tbe middle of March. During tbe week MF Case, Inspector of Noxious Weeds, and Mr Jordan, tbe new Crown Landa Bailiff, visited tbe districs. The Kia Ora went to Lemon Point (Kinobaku) on Thursday and landed 48 ewes, 7 rams and two horses, the property of Mr Brown. Mr Nortbcroft.S.M., is at present seriously indisposed, and his wdMr jor the present is being undertaken by Mr Dyer, S.M., of Auckland. If you want fine potato crops don’t forget to spray your plants with Bhabland’s Potato Blight Exterminator. [t is fatal to blight spores.’* One of the events of the week was a billiard match between a local cueist and a commercial traveller. Kawhia is now one pound poorer. A spray iu time saves not nine, but many times nine, if it be potato plants you spray, and tbe solution Sharland’s Potato Blight Exterminator,* It order to uave further disputes Walter Morgan requests that persons wishing to travel by the mail launch notify him of ,tb»t foot the day previous.* Mr Jonathan informs us that be has received word that the Bank of New Zealand directors have definitely decided not to establish a branch at Kawbia.
Persons who require a first-class piano on very easy terms are advised to read tho new advertisement of tbe London and Berlin Piano Co. ou our back page.*
In reply to an enquiry from us, Mr Greenslade, wired us as follows : “Hon. M‘Nab commences southern tour from Taumaranui 18th M a rob ; dates Kawhia not arranged yet.”
Thousands of pounds are yearly saved to the poultry keepers of this Province by the use of Bharland's Moa Brand Egg Preservative. It makes eggs bring in Is 2d to Is 4d per dozen instead of Gd to Bd. One gallon preserves 80 dozen eggs. See that the correct name is on the label.* Mr Jennings, M.H.R. for Egmont, has definitely decided to contest the Taumaranui seat. ’.A petition signed by 200 electors has been presented to Mr W. M. Bankart, of Te .Mata, ask- ' Jg him to allow himself to be nominated, but we believe that that gentleman has declined. Seven years experience has proved every claim made for Bhabland’s Moa Brand Egg Preservative. In all that time not one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out. It simply cannot fail. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. See that the name is on the laeel.* This year Parliament is going to revise the Customs tariff. At least one million a year should be taken off the Customs tax and be added to the land tax. The burden of taxation is most unfairly adjusted at present. What the people eat, drink or wear should be free from taxation.—Christcbureh Express We would draw the attention of the Roads Department to the bad state of •;he Kawhia-Oparau road, where it comes Ton to the beach. Owing to slips this portion is too narrow for vehicular traffic. This fact can be testified to by Captain Coutts, who capsized his sulky therein his last visit to Kawhia.
The excellent quality of tbe sheep bred on Mr Mason’s run is well known in the Waikato, and the lambs are always eagerly sought after. When Mr Chitty was here last year he purchased line of the rams, which were sent to Onebunga by the Kia Ora on Thursday to Onehung&i en route for tho Waskato.
Tbe agitation ior more schools in this district has had effect, as since the holdidays two more have been established. At Kinobaku instruction <5 being given in a building at Mr J. Bcott’e residence, which takes half time with the Junction school, whilst at Kakaunui 16 scholars are being taught by Miss Cowern. On his own petition Eagle D’Arcy Hamilton, of Kawhia, has been declared insolvent. Mr West, of the Public Trustee’s office, is at present in Kawbia attending to the matter. We regret to announce that at present be h under Dr C. Campboll Jenkins’ treatment, having severely crushed the taird finger of his right hand. Tbe morality of tho credit system as worked in New Zealand isrotten.flt protects tbe “ bad mark ” and victimises tae good one and the man from whom both deal. It is tbe chief cause of gambI ng, extravagance in dress and excess ve drinking. The body of tradesman who combined to cope with the evil would do more good than all the sermons preached. New Plymouth News. You have soaked your sued in Bhakr jd’s Potato Blight Exterminator aud your plants arc now looking well. Keep them well by spraying with tbe Eime solution.* A RUSH ON IT. -What ? DERBY toh-»coo in rew TWO OUNCE TINS Is's splendid*
