Keep them well by spraying with the same solution.* , Those in search of a good invest, mant are recommended to note the advertisement in another column giving details of the Commercial Hotel, Tauranga. At a meeting ot the committee of the recent bazaar, held last week, it was reported that the credit balance was a few shillings over £Bs—a very satisfaetory result. Mr Metcalfe, C.E., of Auckland, paid a visit to Nuknheksri during the week in connection with the Government flax there. He is reporting for a wealthy Auckland syndicate. The Her. Mr Davidson, the newlyappointed Congregational minister at Kawbia, arrived by the Kia Ora on Wednesday. The rev. gentleman will conduct service on Sunday evening next.
There was a very “ stormy ” meeting at Kinohaku the other day, when it was decided by ■ small majority to lift the loan granted for the MahoenuiKawbia road, whelher the £ for £ subsidy was granted or not. Easterly weather prevailed on Wednesday and very heavy rain tell, no less than 2.24 inches being recorded by the Government guage at Kawhia. As C natural result the rivers running into ibe barbonr were in a flooded state.
Bather an unusual event happened in Kawhia on Wednesday last, when Mr D. Galvan’s horses bolted with Mr Mason's “ motor car ’’ koneke. After going about halt-a-mile the vehicle was upset in Pouewe street, the only damage.being a bent axle. ' Seven years experience has proved every claim made for Shabiand’s Moa Buakd Eoo PaxssevAnvx. In all that time not one egg has: been lost When directions have been carried out. It simply cannot tail. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. Bee that th. name is on the laoel.*
The Taumartfitui Press says:—** In tbe event ot Mr Jennings not contesting tbe Taumaranui seat, there is likely to be a plathoria ot candidates for the honour. Amongst those already mentioned are Messrs 0. J. Byan, W. W. M’Oardle, T. Pine and W. Baucke. If is probable that Mr Jennings will be invited by petition to contest this seat.”
By the a.a Kia Ora on Sunday last Me D. P. Baird, who has been practicing as a dentist tor the past 12 months, left Kawhia to take up a luoraldva position at Masterton. During hie residence here Mr Baird has made himself very popular and leavee behind him a large circle ot friends, whose good wishes he has. He was an active member ot the football, tennis and cricket clubs, besides acting as honorary librarian to the local library. When Mr Faiwasser was unable to be present at the local sports Mr Baird took the secretarial duties and carried them out well, so much so that the evening prior to his departure the executive granted him an honorarium o> £B.
On Sunday last tbe a.k. Ketahi arrived in Kawhia with 100 bales of flax which bad been sorted from Messrs Bell Bros, and Hoss’ mill at Harihari. This consignment took up so much ot tbe limited shed accommodation that there was not room for any more, consequently the next load was taken on to Waitara. This fact should spur the local Harbour Board to face the question of increasing the shed, except it is wished that our products be exported from some other place. The N. 8.8. Co.’s tender will be here very shortly, and we are informed that it the local shed will not hold the cargoes tbe officers will be instructed to unload in Raglan. We do not wish to see that, so it behoves tbe local body to attend to tbis important matter. All early Kawhia residents retnem tier tbe old store in Tainui street that has been pulled down this week. Tbe march of improvement, and new fangled present day notions that buildings cannot occupy tbe centre ot a roadway, are responsible for its removal. It has been the remark ot many visitors to Kawbia that half the houses in and about tbe township apnear U> have been, b'jill in an inconsequential way, as though tumbled out haphazard from a dice box, There is a good deal ot building shifting yet to be done before this remark loses its force. Mr J. H. Phillips, of Te Mata, built the stare ip question during tbe time the A.C.s were stationed here, iihnit 28 years ago, end for several years elisr it-was luansged by his bro lher, file bite Tom Phillips. '■ Tom " wr.B s great favourite and a gsttiai fellow, and hie “ suppers,” to which be sometimes gave a general invite, are things to remember unto this day. Sic transit gloria nwndi,
TheMwte’wUo baw'bwm Meeting direct that there is snob » thio >? “ * Government stroke,” and «“ «: ample He* by them could be followed with advantage by many others who have tha expanding of State raooey. Juel at Christmas time the line was completed to Te Hsu a-moa and notwithstanding a peek’s holiday, the Awaroa connection was oompletsnthis (Friday) afternoon—a smart p«» of work. / last the tin,Anomeler reached 85 in the shade. This is recognised as the hottest »7 that has been experienced here for some years. The heat has been very in noh fell, more particularly at night, which has been o, ire oppressive than like day. On Wednesday morning a care of sunstroke occurred hjro, and it is pleasing to report that though severe the suf farer is now, out of denser. On the Sl.W*!£. c '>S* ‘.‘ffi'." him on fee waggon and took him to Mr King’s residence, who immediately drove him to Kawbia. Dr Jenkins was called in and pronounced the case as one of sunstroke. Under treitmani Mr Galvan has now recovered. Not so very mauy months rgo agitation was commenced at Kiritehere to get that locality into the KawMa County, and it was thought fecir the object would be attained. iMt since that time the question appears io have been carefully dropped by-ibe settlers, as letters on the suhfect from the County Council to the Kiritehere Settlers’ Association have not been replied to. The reason of this has been stated by one of the residents there to be that they have their own port now, consequently are independent of Kawhia. This reminds us that there is not the slightest dout t that covetous eyes have been oast at the Kawbia Harbour Board endowment, and we regret to have to say that many wires are being pulled so that a large piece of this valuable laodcan be secured as a Marokopa Biver endowment. This action is to be regretted as it doos not show a public spirit, but a tendency to grab all, no matter at whose expense. The looal bodies need to vigorously protest and do their utmost to come out on top in what will undoubtedly be a " wire-pulling contest.”
