THE-OPARAU LOG.

(TO THE EDITOR.) Sis, —I see in yonr issue o± December 7th that the Oparau correspondent ia again iraking rash statements, which he has evidently picked up from someone (very likely worse than himself) ever ready to blab, I was approached asking if the council would pay for the timber which was used as a hand rail on the footbridge at Oparau. I 9ai«i no, and explained my reasons by saying that the bridge was mostly used by. a few who had plenty of time to repair it themselves at their own expense, as the Government had voted <250 for a bridge and I did not tbinlc it wise to waste ratepayers rates where it did not benefit them, for those that did. not pay rates, Ido not know who the Oparau correspondent is, but it is a pity that he has not she common decency to make sure of his statements before penning them to the Suttles. On several occasions before I have been attacked b> him for not doing my duty, but l put it down to his ignorance. If he has any gri-v anoe against me as councillor, I -ould like aim or others who have written under a nom de plume to have a little more manliness and show it by signing their nstn--, but perhaps if tbeir names werei at tin bot- ’ bum their letters would have no weight Hoping th:« ’etter will help .he Oparau despondent (Leg, pardou.eoriespuadent) with the digeati-in of his Xmas dinner, and pm h m in a better uxour for ths Naw Year —You'-e. vtc., H. ARMS! I O IG. Councillor for Oparau Matakowbia ..Hing
