The meeting of the Kawhia County Council called for Thursday, 22nd inet., has been postponed till Wednesday next, 28th. This was necessitated through it being discovered that the Act distinctly states that the meeting' for tbe election of Chairman shall be held on the fourth Wednesday iu .November.
On Monday morning last the Bridge
Hotel at Waitara was totally destroyed by fire, a boarder named Maguire losing his life. Mr Toomath, manager of the Marokopa Milling Co., was a loser to the extent of £2O, his travelling box, containing clothes, documents and 41J in cash, being consumed.
Attention is directed to the New Zealand Shipping Company’s advertisement on our second page, notifying that the s-e. Kaikoura will load at the Waitara roadstead for Loudon on or about December Bth. We would like to see this shipping route taken advantage of by settlers here, as no doubt thia company is watching oar trade and the more that can be put in thoir way the sooner will Kawhia become a direct port of call for thsir boa a
SMOKERS, PLEASE NOTE— The famous DERBY To bacco is now sold in TWO OUNCE TINS, FLAKE CUT. Try it. Thus the Observer How completely Premier Warrd has altered tbe methods of political warfare in New Zealand is evident from the languid interest shown by the Government in the Manukau election With an Opposition seat open to be captured, it can hardly be doubted that the late Premier would long ere this have bad hia champion selected and the course staked out, and would have done something to force tbe runuiag. Apparently the Ward Ministry intend to allow the Manukau electors to make choice of a member for themselves, without outside influence. If so, it is as it should be.” Seven year j experience has proved every claim made for Suablknd’s Moa Brand Egg PawßßyATivi. In all that time not one egg has been lost when directions have been carried out, It simply cannot fail. One pint bottle preserves seven dozen eggs. See that tbe name is on the 1a041.* That the weather baa beea very rough along the West Coast lately is admitted, and ‘his has delayed the ri moval of the Marokopa Milling Co.’s plant from Kawhia to that river. On arrival there the Kotabi will take ch irge and tow the lighter into the river. We trust that this rather risky undertaking will b- auceesafnlly accomplished, and fbat the company will evenfnally be amply recompensed for the unavoidable »» penaiye delay and their enterpri-e in Ldiiig aneb a big task.

Although a lot of money went out of this district at Melbourne Cup time to THttersail’a only a paltry 410 c*eh prize was won.

11 is pleising to note the good pro gvesß that in being made wilh the ereetiou of the telephone around th<harbour, iho line being completed already to the Puii, about hdf way be tweea Kawhia and Oparau. Mr Walter Morgan’s tender lias been ac-.'eptrd for placing the timber on the line as far as Oparau. Thousands of pounds are yearly saved to the poultry keepers of this Province by the use if Sharland's Moa Brand E<w< Preservative.. I? makeeggs bring in Is 21 to 1, Id per dcz.m instead of 6d to BJ. One gallon preserves 80 dozen eggs. See that the correct name is on the label.* We are always pleased to see news of our district published iu other districts, for it is known to do good. What we do object to though is eorreppondents calling “ stinking fi-b,” as is the case iu the following item of Kawhia news in a recent issue of the King Country Chronicle :—“ Some time ago we ware pr<>miscd that tbe Union S S. Corinna would visit this port from the sou'll and New Plymouth, but so far the boat has not put iu an appearance. I am afraid our trade at present does not warrant the running of the boat of the Corinna class,”
Remember the spores of Potato Blight are carried by the wind from diseased to healthy plants, therefore to keep yoor healthy plants safe spray with Sharland’s Potato Blight Ex terminator, which is fatal to blight ■pores.* An example of the rapid increase of the quantity of mail matter that comes to Kawhia was noticeable this (Friday) afternoon, when no less than six bags and three large hampers were delivered. To convey this lot to the post office a cart and horse were commandeered, and a photograph of the unique turn-out was taken by Mr F. Hosking, a corf of which will be sent to tbe Chief Postmaster in support of the request that the Department provide a hand cart.
Mr J. J. Shaldriok, of the Northern S.S. Co., has just returned from atrip to the Marokopa district down Kawhia way, and is much impressed with the privations and difficulties which confront the pioneer settlers in that locality. The object- of his visit was in connection with the requisition of a number of settlers that the company should open up trade for Marokopa. The struggles of these men, said Mr Shaldrick, in conversation with a Farmers’ Weekly representative, in their endeavour to win a home from the grip of the primeval fore it, is truly heroic. In some of the biekblucks he encountered settlers leading a string of pack horses, laden with butter, produce, fencing wire, and such like. In fact, this primitive method seemed to be the ■ nly mode of conveyance. Mr Shaldrick is a staunch Government supporter, but he declares that be will nover vote for a candidate who advocates a 06 years lease as a fair tenure, after having witnessed tbe trials which the Marokopa pioneers haye to encounter. —Farmers’ Weekly. Yon have soaked yoar need in Shamland’m Potato Bu«ht Ektkbminatob and your plants are now looking well. Keep them well by spraying with tbe same solution.*
