Farmers’ Union.

AWAROA BRANCH. A meeting of the above was held on October 6th, Mr W. D. Humphreys in the chair. The meeting was called more especially to consider tha proposed Land Act. After most of those present had expressed their strong condemnation of the Act, the following resolution was unanimously carried: —“ That this meeting of the Awaroa branch of the Farmers’ Union is strongly of opinion that, in tha best interests of the settlement of the colony, selectors of Crown land should have the option of acquiring the freehold of their holdings, and strongly protests against the land proposals of the Government to abolish optional tenure, and also expresses its at the Government ignoring the weight of evidence in favour of the freehold contained in the report of the Land Commission.” The matter of freights to Kawhia was discussed, also the inconvenience of all freights having to be prepaid, one speaker saying that it was an insult to the residents of the district. It was decided to write to the Northern 3-8. Go. protesting against the exorbitant freight charged to Kawhia, and asking that freights ba reduced to the same as to Waitara, and also that freight be payable at Kawhia. The Government are to ba asked to proceed with tha erection-of the telephone round the harbour immediately, as the poles will nearly all have to be taken by water ; and are to be urged to enforce the Noxious Weeds Act more rigorously eo that weeds will not have a chance to become established in the back blocks.
