The Department of Agriculture has just issued a very useful leaflet fur farmers on the subject of manuring of potatoes. The Icafl-t is by Mr B. C. Aston, the chief chemist, and deals with the plot experimeutal scheme for 1906 Mr Aston say? that should it be possible to dr»as a strip of the plots to be unsd with farmyard manure, or with lime before ploughing, the value of the tests will be treb'ed. I’he m inure must bo well rotted, and may be applied at the rate of up to 10 tons per acre. Lime must be well burnt i and applied at the rate of two tons to j the acre. Ordinary agricultural lime i must be slacked in leaps and then j spread. Other lime may be spread j without previous slacking. Whatever method of planting is adopted should be uniform. The Department is arranging for a limited number of sets of mixtures for manuring potatoes. Potato growers will find a specific j for the dreaded blight in Sharland’s i Potato Blight Exterminator.
