If it i'h just to dispossess improving white eotrlera of their homesteads, it is surely fair to take over lands which the owners (natives) have neyer occupied or cultivated, and which they would probably sell if they could to the first man who came along with the money in bis hand.—Napier Herald.

No longer can the Settler claim to be the only paper in the King Country, for we hear khat papers have lately been established at Te Kuiti and Tau maranui. We are delighted that such is the case, as we feel cure that the influence of these two new organs will be a great lever in obtaining for the back blocks and King Country the justice and consideration that has been withheld in the past. The first duty of the Government is to take steps that the huge areas of native land now lying idle—and becoming a menace to neighbouring settlers—should, as soon as possible, be made to-contribute to the prosperity of the colony, and to the cost of gone* raland local administration. The last Ministry preferred the more showy and easy method of buying improved lands, and they exhibited great judgment in doing it where it was desirable to increase their voting power.— Napier Herald. SMOKERB, ATTENTION PLEASE. —The best of all smokes is DERBY OUNCE FLAKE CUT in TWO TINS.

Hewitt, and was attended by the Misses Florence and Millie Hewitt and Mies Cissy Troaghton. Mr T. A. Troughton acted as best man, and Mr W. O. Hewitt as groomsman.—Observer. The Te Rau-a-moa Settlement is thus commented on by the Commissioner of Crown Lands in his last re port“ This is the only settlement of its class which is showing signs of any progress. A dairy factory is in fall swing, and is supplied by the settlers in this district and surrounding districts. The roads are good in summer. Unfortunately, noxious weeds ata very prevalent, and great difficulty is being experienced in era- 1 dicating the ragwort. There are 380 head of cattle on the settlement, and I improvements to the value of £2450; but for the appearance of ragwort (though steps are being taken to eradicate it) this would have been a really successful settlement.”

SMOKERS.—A first •class tobacco is DERBY FLAKE OUT in the new TWO OUNCE TINS. The statutory meeting relative to the raising of a loan for improvements to the Kawhia (township, which was advertised for Saturday night last, did not eventuate, owing to everyone forgetting about it. The reason given by moat of the ratepayrrs ae to their non-attendrnce was the bad weather, but we think that if the night bad been fine the result would have been the same. We have often wondered why our town has not advanced more rapidly, and most say that the reason ia that the residents are too indifferent to push anything for their own welfare. We nro about tired of harpina mn this subject—an earthquake might bo 6f some use iu arousing Kawbiai-es from their lethargic inertness.

“ To discontinue advertising/’ says John Wanamaker, the millionaire, “ b like taking down your sign. If you want to do business you must lot the people know it. Standing advertisements, when frequently changed, are better and cheaper tban reading notices. They look more substantial and business-like, and inspire confi dence. I would as soon think of doing business without a clerk as v’ithout advertising.” This is advice which all bnsiness men would do well to follow, but it must be borne n mind that the advertising medium must be the best obtainable. We can confidently say that In consequence of its large circulation, The Kawhia Settler is one of the best papers to advertise is. For Children's Hacking Coughs at Night Woods’ Great Peppermint Cure, Is tJd aad 2a 6d per bottle,

Don’t forget that good printing can be done at the Settler Office. Tenders close on October lab for fencing at the Kawhia Cemetery. Up tn the time of our going to press the s.s. Kia Ora had not arrived from New Plymouth, where she proceeded to owing to the low tides preventing the steamer negotiating the Waitara bar. Ou Saturday lastjtbe heaviest day’s fall of rain for the present year was experienced, the guage at Kawhia measuring 2.lain. In consequence of the heavy raiu tho mooting of the Kinohaku branch of the Farmers' Union did not take place. SMOKERS, PLEASE NOTE.— ' The famous DEBBY Tobacco is now sold in TWO OUNCE TINS, FLAKE CUT. Try it. By the Kia Ora on Tuesday last 38 small Racks of seed potatoes arrived at Kawhia consigned to the Maoris. The Government is to bo commended fur its action, and also on the fact that the tubers have all be dipped in a blight-resisting preparation. Now that Parliament is sitting, it behoves this district to keep the move mmt for the construction ci the Kawhia Harbour Main Trunk Line railway before the public and the Gove’H went. With this object in view a meeting is called for Monday evening next, at 8 p.m.

At the Hamilton District Court on Tuesday Kenneth Bayne was found not guilty of stealing a greenstone mere at Kinohaku. The case was beard by a ju'lge and jury. Mr Tole prosecuted and Mr Reed (instructed by Mr Basley) defended. Accused gave evidence on his own behalf, the only other witness called for the defence being Donald M'Donald.

Some of the Commissioner of Crown Land’s report makes interesting reading, for instance the portion referring to the Te Kuiti Village Settlement: “ A number of sections have been forfeited and will shortly be offered for cash.” Evidently this means establishing the freehold. Why, therefore, cannot the Te Rau-a-moa and Kinohaku settlements, which are under the same tenure, be offered in a like manner?

A rather novel way of reminding our member that it was time a certain firm of Wellington seadmen were compelled to cease advertising ragwort for sale was put into force week, when a Te Rau-a moa settler sent him the following poet card :—Could you kindly oblige by ordering for me one dozen pots of ‘ Athonna Abrotanifolia ’ (ragwort), advertised in Gibbons’ seed catalogue at Is per pot. It cannot ba procured io Auckland.” Tht adequate reading should precede settlement is a fundamental axiom which our haphazard methods have hitherto ignored, and a small and .competent commission with an unrestricted range of enquiry could surely show the country how this condition could be observed in practice, besides throwing valuable light on the question of co-operative labour and the other pressing problems of railway and road construction,—Wellington Post.
