THE PROPOSED TOWN BOARD

(TO THE EDI iOR.) Sir,—“Town B jarder ” in y ur last issue takes exception to remarkmade by Crs Norton and Armstrong, but I am certain that each gentleman was correct in his statement. As to that of Cc No'ton, about signing the petition to oblige plr M-Cirdlo, it is true, and can be substantiated by m my in Kawhia, but I do not say that it is the case with every signer, Cr Armstrong is to be commended f>r speaking out as he did, and that it should be left to him to do so is some what surprising. Many wo >ld not sign the petition when asked oy Mr E. Faiwasser (so I hive beard that gentleman say) yet when Mr M‘Cardle tojk it round nearly all that number subscribed their names. Why did they do so ? Simply because of Mr M'Cardle and the benefits that he explained would be derived. But I hardly think that they were told of the extra taxes they would have to pay (taxes that would not bring equivalent benefits, I fear), so I hold that Cr Armstrong was right—they really did not know what they signed. One reason given was that Kawhia would have more power on tbe Harbour Board if a Tjwb Board was formed, but surely such would not be so. Although I signed the petition, I am content to go on under the Council, and now I have more carefully considered the question must say that 1 am against tbe formation of a Town Board. Can any of those who are interesting themselves in this movement give me some idea of tbe benefits to be derived ? Until suoh is done lam an ANTI TOWN BOARDER.
