A nice collection of post cards, comic and views of New Zealand, have just been secured from Auckland, and are now on sale at the Settler office. Only one tender was received for the erection of the derrick on the Kewbia Wharf. This was consider'd too high, bnt-it is likely that the contract will be lei. We sincerely hope so.
A pleasant children’s party wm given by Mrs F. W. Newton on Mon day evening last, when a number of juveniles of the town were mustered at her residence to- say good bye to Mias Georgia Langley on her departure for Auckland to attend college. The rateable value of the various ridings of the Kawhia County Council is as follows —Matakowhai, £59,594; Te Kann, £12,609 ; Awaroa, £17,618; Waiharakeke, £17,515 ; Taharoa, £13,593 ; Kawhia, a little over £12,000. Mr Homer, who was formerly steward of the s.B. Kia Ora, has been transferred to tbe Kanieri. Mrs Nelson is not making good progress towards recovery from an injury to her arm, but her place is being ably filled by Miss A. Norris, formerly of the s.s. Rarawa,
A few days ago the wbare io which tbe Messrs Kinnaue Bros, lived at Kiritehere caught fire, and before the owners could arrive on the scene considerable damage was done. The place was ruined, and a lot of their belongings destroyed, but fortunately the most valuable (including a large aura of money) were saved.
The intimation of tbe death of the Hou. R J. Seddon camo as a severe shook to residents, and for a while it was hard for many to realise that such a grand life had pome to ao sudden a termination. The news of the sad event was commaoicated to this office at 230 pm. on Monday, and within seven minutes the public were notified by extraordinary.
Mr J. I. Prentice has on view in his shop window a series of eanp-sbots taken at the recent Kawhia Axemen’s Carnival, the pictures being excellent samples of photographer’s art. In tbe Kawhia Cup Chop, although there was very little to spare between the placed men, Mr Prentice managed to secure splendid negatives of the first, second and third fiuubiug their blocks.

Ao issue or two ago we notified that a bottle bad been picked up on the Taharoa beach Ooutaihing'a letter. We hayir* shown the epistle, which is in a good state of preservation, and reads as follows:—“This buttle was set out on Oandishe’s Bay, New Plymouth, Taranaki, by Charles Dunstan Hoskin, aged 15. Inside the bottle you will'find 12 buttons of different kinds inside aoapsuls.—C.D H, September 30th, 1894.” The relic was found by Riwi, on May 10> 1906. The following is tbe balance sheet of the recent complimentary social at Kawhia, to Mr H. J. Greenslade, M II R Receipts : Tickets, £lO 12i. Total, £lO 12s. All tbe tickets have not yet been banded in, it is thus expected that the surplus will bo increased, which the committee have decided to hand over to the wife and family of Mr W. Hillyer.

We learn ihai’a canvass has been made by a lady resident of Kawhia and a goochum realised.lt has been suggested that a concert and dance be held in Kawhia ab- u» July 6<h, and with tbe idea of (bringing this to a successful issue, wo have been asked to convene a meeting in the County office on Wednesday next at 7.80 p.m., when a good attendance is hoped for. His life was a devotion to duty to the well being of the people whom he loved, and his great work for tbe colony and the Empire will cause his name to be revered. Will attend to your request re wreath.—Wm. Hadl-Jones.”
