Social to Mr. H. J. Greenslade, M.H.R.

On Saturday night last a very successful social took place in Scott’s Hall, wh n abont 60 persons attended. The hall bad been beautifully decora-

ted for the occasion aud reflected great credit on the ladies and gentle-

men who spent so much time and la bonr in effecting the same. The room was cmpletely enveloped iu evergreens, festoons of fligs, etc., being suspended from the roof, whilst the stage was prettily arranged as a drawing room.

Mr W. W. M'Cardle, Chairman of the Kawhia County Council, welcomed Mr Greenslnde in an appropiate and able speech.

Mr Gre< nslade on rising to respond was accorded a flattering reception. He thanked Kawhia residents for their kindness iu entertaining him, and congratulated those responsible for the

decorations on their success, as the effect produced was better than be had before seen at similar gatherings. He would also like to thank Mrs Howes for tbe artistic invitation card, which he would prize as a moment© of a very pleasant evening. He was gratified to see so many political opponents present, and he realised that it was the duty of every elector to sink all par’y differences ond* work for the welfare of the elec'orate. As far as he was concerned he made no distinction whatever, and simply wished to ben fit the whole of the electors. Wien be went to Wellington he would eudoivour to place before tho House tbe disabilities under which tbe residing districts lived, and thus got the condition improved. After the sessirn he would probably be able to induce a Minister of tbo Crown lo accompany him to Kawhia, iu ord r to show the necessity of opening up the land and reading it. He hoped that bo would get to know his constitu-nts bjtter, and that they would be satisfied with bis representation. (Applause). Dancing was then proceeded with, Mr Pearson being MC. Mrs Langley provided the music, assisted by Miss Gods- ll and Mr W. Davies. An excel ent supper was provided by Mr A. L. Turrell. The dances were interspersed with songs, the items being pariicuhrSy well rendered, Mr Archer sang that difficult song “The List Watch ” excellency, and together wi h Mr Rato the duo's j“Junita” and “ White Wiog»,” each item being well received. Mr W. Howe was very successful with Lis two numbers “The Out post’s Sentinel ” and “ The King’s Command,” and his reappearance on some future occasion will be appreciated. The singing of “ Aathore ” by Miss Hamilton was admired by those present, the number being noted for the clear enunciation of tho vocalist. This y .ung lady’s singing has greatly improved since she last appeared before a Kawhia audiouce, and certain it is that she has profited by having noeived high - class tuition. Mrs Lingley and Miss Hamilton wore the accompanists.

Before the gathering concluded at 11.45 p.m , a ypte af thanks was carried by acclamation to all (hose who h-d assisted, on the mo<ion of Dr 0. C tnipbell Jenkins.
