THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, MAY 4, 1906. THE MATAKOWHAI BLOCK.

It will be welcome news to Gue readers to hear that the applications for the apo in’ment - f 81-ick Committees with respect to the Moerangi and Maiakowbai blocks of native land are ( gazetted for bearing before (be Waikato District Land B >ard at Ngaruawabia on the 9th day cf M »y next, i The effect of petting up these Block | Committees will be that tbe title o owners to tbe land corn prised in tbe j ab ive bl< cks will bo a-cerlaine I and | settled, and tbe way paved for the j Government to deal with the land, either by purchase, or lease on behalf j of the native owners. All experience goes to show that tbe process of dealing with native land is anything but expeditious and this new departure of ascertaining titles through tbe agency of Block Committees will be watched with much interest. It is no doubt a far cry from tbe appointment of Lhe-e Committees to the time when the land will be opened for settlement, but we have reason to believe the work iu this case will not be allowed to hang fire. The Government at last seem to be roused to a proper sense of the importance of bringing these large blocks of land frotn a state of nature into improved farm?—from lying a waste and a bar to t-efc;.lament to pro fitable holdings helping th} general progress of the district. The welfare and prosperity of f.hj Kiwbii County is p.o intimately affectid in this matter —the settlement of the waste native and other land around the harbour L j of .'iicb vital importance to tbe settlor- i —th.fa this move will emte ail to take heart <>( grace that at last can be seen ■omo finality t» iho present deadlock.
