The Dairying Industry.
Word bus been received .by Mr W. W. M'Cardle from the representative of Messrs Niven and Co., that the firm could not erect a factory in the district for next season with a guarantee of 300 cows. The action of this firm in making a definite promise and drawing back at tbe eleventh hour hardly meets with the approval of setihrs of this district, who are, naturally, in censed at tbe treatment.
Last week we announced the fact that Mr Shirley, dairy expert, intended visiting the Kawbia district shortly. Yesterday (Thursday) we received the following wire from that gentleman : —“ Expect reach Kawhia Saturday.” The benefits to be derived from Mr Shirley’s visit muH be patent to all, and we would strongly advise those interested in the industry co meet the expert to both hear bis views and get the benefit of his advice. Mr Greenslade, M.H.R., writes : “ How is the dairying proposal progressing ? Judging by a recent leading article of yours the people do not seem very keen about it. I trust the agitation will not be allowed to drop, as the erection of creameries and tbe estab lishment of tbe industry would give a great impetus to the Kawhia district.” We learn that tbe gentlemen who have undertaken to go round the district to ascertain how many cows would be milked, are so far very pleased with the support promised. It will be possible to ascertain the exact number in the course of a day or two.
