A nice collect ion. of post ohfUh, -comic and views of Now Zenlan'd. hav6 jnet been secured from Auckland, ■ind are now on aale at the Settl«jk office. IThe editor of the Settler haa been away for a Rbnrt holiday since ur last, which explains the leteoesH if this issue. We ask our readers iftJnigenoa for this, and also if any items of interest have been overlooked. At the Ohaupo Sports ou Eteler Monday, Messrs J. and C. The rates due to the Kawhia County Council are coming in far ton slowly. Mr Newtan, the collector, states that bo will soon havo to compiiu the defaulter's list, and advit>e» those who wish to keep their names off the same to pay promptly. Whilst riding after a horse on Bunday last in Jervois street, Kawhia, Master Nosbitt was thrown heavily, rendering him unconscious. The lad was oarritd to Mrs Morgan’s residence where he was attended to, recovering half an hour later.

Mr Kerr, a solicitor from New Plymouth, accompanied by his wite, spent the Easter holidoya at Kawhia. The various places of interest around the harbour wero visited, and both Mr and Mrs Kerr were delighted with the beauties thereof. We regret to bear that Mr C. W. Hursthonse, Chief Engineer of Roads, ms taken from Te Kuiti to the Hamilton Hospital on Wednesday suffering from gastric htmorrhago. Latest report, it ie pleasing to state, are that the patient is progressing very satisfactorily.

The footballers of the Kawhia County intend opening the season on Saturday, May sth, when a match will be played at Maketu between teams selected on the ground. On Friday night, May 4th, a ball will be held iu Scott’s Hall, when efforts will be made to make it a huge success. Mr VV. W. M'Cardie has been appointed a member of the Auckland Land Board io place of Mr H. J. Greens lade, M.H.R, who has retired. We congratulate onr townsman upon the appointment, and feel that bs wide knowledge on land questions will be of great benefit to settlers iu the Auckland Province.

During the past week or two the beauties of the Kawhia district have been receiving attention from the Anckland weeklies. The Graphic devotes two pages to views of the interior of the Marokopa Caves (taken by flashlight), which are beautiful pictures, and will no doubt open rhe eyes of the Tourist Department, and prove to them that there are other caves besides Waitomo. Copies of the Graphic can be ordered at (be Settler Office. * Whilst iu Auckland last week Messrs H. H. Pettit and F. A. Pearson waited on Mr Shirley, Government Dairy Expert, relative lo the dairying industry _Ju this district. After an interview lasting over au hour, Mr Shirley decided to visit Kawbia and spend a week visiting ths places around tbo harbour, so as to see for himself (he nature of the Country end what would be most suit able (hereto. He also proposes to uddiesB a meeting of settlers. The erratic ’way iu which the s.s. Kia Ora has been run to. Kawhia

lately has caused muoti annoyance and inconvenience. The steamer was scut to Wanganui last Saturday which resulted iu her missing her uanal trip this week. It appears to ns that the Northern S.S. Co. think that they can treat this district as tkey like, but we give them early warning that there is a limit to the patience of residents hereabouts, and unless they get better treatment in the future the talked of “ other arrangements ” will take concrete torm.

At a largely-at(ended meeting of set tiers, held at Th Rau-a-moa on flic 14th iust., the following resolution was unanimously carried:—“ That this tneeling place on record its appreciation of the rebate of rent recent ly granted by the Auckland Land Board to the owner of a section iu the Kawhia South district through iuaccessibility to the land, and to bring the mutter under the Member for the district’s notice, and urgo upon him to give his assistance to those who may app'y for rebates of rent when their holdings are under conditions similar to the one iu question.”

“ To discontinue advertising,” says John Wanamaker, the millionaire, “ is like taking down your sign. If you want to do bueinesg you must let the people know it. Blanding advertisements, when frequently changed, are better and cheaper tbau reading noticed. They look more substantial aod businesH-like, and inspire confidene3. I would as soon think of doing business without a ejerk as without advertising." This is advice which all business men would do well to follow, but it must be borne in mind that the advertising medium must ba the best obtainable. We can confidently say that in consequence of its Urge circulation, Th* Kawhia Settler is one of the best papers to advertise in.
