WHARF FUNDS.
(to the editor.) Sir,—l am told that there is a petition waiting to be signed asking that the money in tbe hands of the wharf trustees may be retained for expenditure lot tbe good of the harbour in - stead" of being handed over to the Road Engineer to waste. I for one am quite in accord with the petition, and I should like to know where it is. There are many things the money could be spent io doing, such as extending tbe present wharf, by doing part of the work now and finishing when more funds have accumulated, or in putting launch wharves in various parts of tbe harbour. One work that is badly wanted is a small breastwork at tbe Oparau Ferry that a launch can tie up to, so as to let coach passengers and goods be loaded without the difficulty the present state of t ffairs entails : also another breastwork at the Awaroa landing, or tbe improvement of the access by water to the Kinobaku landing. There is also the matter of marking out some of th» channels. I suppose that of tbe monej' received fur wharfages at hast three quarters, or perhaps more, comes from tbe country settlers, and very little from the town, and on those grounds I think tbe country settlers’ wants should be attended to.—Yours, ete., PAONEONE.
