THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, MARCH 3, 1996, SCENERY PRESERVATION.
Mr. W. W. Sm.th, the Secretary of the Scenery Preservation Commission, epsnt last week in and about Kawhia ▼biting the various places of interest be/e; be also wont to Marakops, to tbe caves and waterfalls on tbat river. As the result of bis vi-it a number of suggestions will be made by tbe Com* missioners to tbe Government to reserve certain beauty spots, tress, and places of intrinsic value or historic interest around tbe harbour ; if tbe Government receive tbe suggestions favourably, tbe places mentioned will be acquired and become public property, aud as far as possible be proterved from abuse or destruction. This unquestionably is a good move on tbe part of ths Government, and their forcthougbtfulnese in this matter will every year become more appreciated by the public. Tbe bsnefite arising from tbe work of this Commission will probably not be very apparent to, or much felt, by tbe “ grown ups ” a nonget us; for full commendation the Sedduß Government will have to look to tbe youngsters now growing up, or still more to future generations. When much of the work of this Government will have become dim to the memory, or out of knowledge of I ba many, toe fact that they gave thought .to tbe future, that through this al.ru istio legislation the reaepyes were acqui 6<l and banded down In perpetuity to be health and plo.isure reaurte io tbe coining crowding population, will in flue time win appreciative rec gni tian. Wisely tbe Government are not
ksnn to hand over any of the reserve? to the local bodies to look after tmeon ditioually. It has been found that eome local bodies are strictly utilitarian and but little inclined to cultivate the beauties of nature, except at a jirvfii to themselves. Il is to be hoped that tbe Government take a strong stand in thia matter, that the management of the Scenery Reserves be kept in ex pert and reliable hands. Mr Smith reports splendid scenic attractions in the neighbourhood, and considered the Harbour a charming pl toe ; be bad only viewed it during excep ionally hue weather; Kawhia wa=> noted for health giving climate aud clear atmosphere, and bsd maintained ita reputation during his visit. Mr Smith left yesterday on way tor Raglan and Te Mata.
