INJUSTICE TO THE LABOURER
Wx regret to have to draw attention to tbo manner in which eome of the la
loamrs rn tbe road are paid—or alter apt paid—tbe following caw jot being an isolated one. Recently wo men took a contract which bau »een tried and given up by lens competent men, and succeeded in riot only doing it well but in making gow, very good, wages. This is apparently a crime in the eyes of tbe Departments, for th y were refused any further Übougb men were much wantec, •cesumably because they ware apt to •uake too much money. But fomcthing bad also to be done to equalise dr-gs, so instead of paying the men a: soon m tbe work was passed, they have been kept waiting tof thev money for over a m /nth and as yet have not been paid. Sueh methods do qot c immend themselves. If » private firm was to descend to such paLry methods tbe law would good bring it to its bearings, but the Government is above all law and evidently a long way off justice.
