Prisoner at Large.
A prisoner named Arthur, alias Arthur Edward Jones, recently arrested at Kawhia, and now doing four months in Mount Eden for stealing, and who was brought to Te Awamutu on Wednesday to answer the horse stealing, escaped from custody at about eleven o’clock on Wednesday night. He was granted permission to go to the lavatory, and a few minutes later the police went for him. The prisoner could not be found, and it being a very dark rainy night all search proved fruitless. The following morniug Constable McPhee, Fraser, Mc Namara and FitzGerald searched the district of Te Awamutu but no trace of the man could be found. Information has been received that the prisoner was recaptured on Sunday afternoon by Constable McPhee, and Native Constable Motu Heta, between Pirongia and Te Hau a-moa.
