“New Zealand Illustrated."

A COLONIAL PRODUCTION. New Zealand Illustrated, ” for 1905, the “ Weekly Preu ” Christmas Number, which is just published, is a splendid production, and surpasses every annual that we have seen. The cover especially marks a great advance ; its design is so simple, so striking, and so artistically beautiful that it must be a source of pleasure to everyone who sees it, and of pride co New Zealanders generally, for this, like the rest of the annual and the two supplements, is designed and printed by the “ Weekly Press ” staff. The contents of this 1905 “ New Zealand Illustrated ” well justify its name, for its 163 picture* include scenes of beauty and interest from every part of the colony. Special features are tbs remarkable studies in Maori life and character of Mr Chas. M. Phillip-, some of whose contributions this ye*r, e g., “An Ea*y Cannon,” “After the Manner of their Ancestors,” and “Erena” are true masterpieces; tee magnificent alpine pictures of tbe Rev. Henry E. Newton, two of whose panoramas are well worthy of fraxirg (acd With these may lie mentioned Dr. Herz’s “ The Hoch'itettsr Ic-fail ’ ) and ths bird life photographs of Mr Ed jar Stead, particularly the great flights cleverly caught in the air and ir focu>. The fiction is as usual by the foremost writers of light literature ->f the day, and wo observe that the editor gives first place to a story by a New Zealander, Mr Alfred A. G;aoe, of Nelson. Ihe principal supplement •hi< year is Mr VV. Dittmer’s “ Mana," a great pic nre.
