Kawhia County Council.
The usual monthly meeting of the above body was held in Scott’s Hall on Monday-last, when there were present—Cra H, Shaw, A. N. Norton, G. Jonathan, H. Armstrong and W. J. Shaw. Cr W. Shaw was voted to the chair. The m n ites of the lait meeting were re id and confirmed. LEMON POINT. A letter was read from Mr J. Wright, Kinohaku, staling that he had decided to sell only those sections at Lemon Point fronting the road along the beach, and to abandon the rest of the sub division. Ha had offered a mad ‘round the beach to the Commissioner of Crown Lands, and if it was accepted be would not again bother the council. If not accepted he would undertake to form the road as far as it affected the sections cut up for sale to the satisfaction of the conned. Or H. Snaw said he had inspected the roads, the grades of which were too steep for the council to take over. Mr Whitcombe said that some of tho grades were 1 in 5. Mr Wright intended to abandon that road, and get the Government to take it over. The Chairman : The Government are forming the road outside the boundary of Lemon Point, and will doubtless be pleased to get it. The letter was received. THE LOAN. The Secretary to Treasurer wrote, in reply to the letter asking for a loan of £12,000, enquinrg the purpose for which the loan was required, whether the work could be considered new work, and under which section of the Act it was decided to rake the loan. Cr Babbage said he would like more information on the subject. Was the loan over the whole county or specified rating districts ?
The Chairman : Over specified rating districts. The proposal is just a “ feeler ” for the Government. Cr Babbage did not know whether 1 the settlers in his riding were prepared to go in for a loan yet. The Chairman, We only want a schedule just now. Cr Jonathan : It will be optional whether we take the loan or not. (The complition of the schedule was then proceeded with.) Cr Armstrong remarked to Cr Babbage that Cr M'Cai’dle stated that the Awaroa-settlers were prepared to go in for a loan to metal the Awaroa road/ —Cr Babbage :He had no authority for making the statement.—When the Kawhia township was mentioned. Or Jonathan applied for £2so.—Cr Arm strong : Make it £5OO. All the streets want forming.—Cr Jonathan agreed that such was the case, but if he asked for more for the township it would only be robbing other ridings. His policy was to spend only what was absolutely necessary in the town, and let the rest be expended in developing the district.—The following schedule was eventually decided on : Awaroa. Road ... ... £2lOO Okupatu Road 2500 Mahoenui Road ... ... 5000 Kawhia Township ... 250 Waitetu.ua-Aotea Road .. 1750 Total £12,00© A KAWHIA HOAD. Cr W. W. M‘Cardie wrote relative the road at the back of bis section. The Native Land Council would nut give him a title, owing io this not being a recognised road. He asked the council to take it over. Councillors agreed that it was better to have the Government to take is over, and it was resolved, That the attention of the Government be called to Leithard Street, connecting tfie Kawhia township with the Karewa township.”—Carried. THIRDSA communication from the Department of Lauds and Survey was read, stating that the sum of £BO2 referred to as having been passed by the Land Board for payment to the Public Account, was the balance of thirds which bad accrued in the old Kawhia County up to January 81st, 1905. Proposals for the expenditure of this amount were submitted by Mr Burd and approved by the Board. A schedule of thirds accrued daring the past six months was also forwarded.
