The daughter of Arapo, aged about 4 years, was severely scalded atKawaroa on Tuesday last, owing to falling whilst carrying a billy of water, which •pilt over her body. The sufferer was attended by Mr A. F, Wilaon, and is now progressing satisfactorily. A peculiar accident happened recently to an infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Turnbull. ■ The child and her brother were pitying with a spade when the latter accidently let it fail on to his sister’s foot, with the result that one of the toes was completely levered. Messrs Jonatbau Ltd. are now having their cash orders packed in Auckland and consigned direct to clients, as they find it more profitable to do so* It is, of course, essential to make the orders fairly large, or the charges of delivery would be too heavy on their customers.* We are in receipt of a copy of a paper entitled “The Teeth of our Children,” read by Mr Thompson before the Dental Confetenc? held in Wellington on June 7th. In view of the fact that school committees in other portions of the colony are having the pupils’ teeth examined by dentists, we think that the local committee might also attend to this matter, more especially so considering the fact that there is now a qualified dentist residing in Kawhia.
The following letter appeared in tbs last issue of the Raglan Chronicle, under tho heading “ Kawhia County Boundariea ” :—Sir, —When a petition was sent to the Colonial Secretary by, I think, all of the settlers of the northern part of Kawhia County, the reply was received that the adjast-m-nb should be made after the Kawhia Council was established. I heard that several of the councillors of that body admit the fairness of the re quest, and hope that Cr Norton will bring the matter forward at an early date. If it was dona at once we should be given an opportunity of voting for our representative! on the Raglan Council, to which body wo must ba eventually attached, and would probably be exempt from piying a rate to a body that we can hardly expect to interest itself ou our behalf,—Yours, etc., Settler.” There was a fair attendance at the Raglan hall ou Saturday evening last to witness two Wood-chopping mat-' chcs arranged between Messrs Pretty and Arch. Armstrong. The first match was in a Ift. log, PreDygiving Armstrong 30 sec. start, and/ the wager was #2 a-side; in the second, Pretty had to give his oppo-{ mint 1 minute in an 18 in log,J for £5 a>side In the 1-ft. chop Arm.', strong won with only a few seconds.Z Pretty was only about four blows be-; bind when Armstrong's block fell { The second chop was more and was much watched with much io- j lcrest by these present. In this Arm- J strong, with a start, made good progress in his time allowed, but when Pretty started he made the, chips fly in great style, and eventually' non easily, the time bring 1 min. 40/ sees, C
