When he arrived in Kawhia some 20 months ago, it was distinctly stated thafr£H>o per annum would be fr >m settiers and a £5O grant from the Government. There wdre 38 uames handed in, of which number 62 paid the first quarter, bnt only 12 paid tbe last quarter, and si see it was rumoured he was leaving another four or five subscriptions had been received. loateiy he had had more than six offers from the Government to take positions as medical subsidised hy settlers at salaried ranging from £320 to £450 per year, together with private practice, whilst he held in his pocket an offer to travel from the first of January next at £3 8s pet day. If he was to remain in Kiwuln he must have £lOO placed to hie credit in a bank before December ld ( if that were not done be would have to go away for twelve moaiiH. Pro» raises were absolutely useless ; taf had taken them once hat would not do eo again. There were 2700 inha&taiits in the district (without Maocis) and ' 280 responsible personages, * and it ■ should not be difficult to ’et haff of this number to subscribe. He ascribed the lack of interest last time to the (act that the trustees were out of touch with the district, being all residents of the town, and he suggested that they appoint a member from each portion of the harbour. Mr Mackenzie ; If we let the doctor go away we will never get another one The Chairman : No. If we titow him to leave the district we are gojhy of a criminal act and deserve If members are chosen from different places round the harbour the amount would be easily collected, and trustees could be appointed. Mr Whiwombe moved and Mr Gosling seconded: “ That tire membra of tbe Kawhia County Council be appointed trustees, and also to canvass and collect subscriptions in their respective districts.” Cr Norton remarked that tbe settlers near him belonged to tbe Raglan club. However, he would not mind contributing £1 Is to see tbe doctor stay ia Kawhia. (Hear, hear). The motion was carried. Dr Jenkins said that he ale) received £5O per annum for attending to the Maoris, but that would have to cease, as it’did not pay him. He had to provide medicines and pay his own travelling expenses, the result being that last quarter his allowance wasex« seeded by expenses by ss. Mr Mackenzie suggested applying to the Government for an extra £5O.

Me Pettit did not think it fair to charge bachelors £l, and moved; “ That the bachelors fee to the club bo 10k.” Seoondb. by Mr H. Armstrong and carried.
