The want of a resident J;P. was once more brought prominently to our notice last Monday, when two charges were heard, which meant sending a Hunch to Rakaunui (it happened the tide ’suited) to bring over Mr F. The prisoners had to pay the lauuch hire in addition to the fines which were inflicted. Surely one Justice is not enough for 2000 people and one or more should certainly bo appointed at once.

On Sunday last the usual quietude of the Kawhia beach was disturbed by a disgraceful scene, caused by two yonng men, employed in the bush at Oparau, indulging in a merry beat of fisticuffs, stripped to the waist. One was under tba influence of liquor and was getting the worst of tKe encounter, when Constable M‘Carthy arrived on the scene and called “ time,” by placing the offenders under arrest. The sober pugilist was promptly bailed out, but his inebriated opponent was kept under lock and key until the following morning* The sequel was the appearance of both before Mr F. Cowern, J.P., the former on charges of drunkenness and fighting, whilst the latter was charged with fighting. Fines of £1 on each charge and 5s respectively were recorded, with 13s 6d each costs—-rather a dear price to pay for the privilege of giving a boxing exhibition.
