Telephone Communication.
During the past few months numerous requests have been made to the Government for the establishment ot telephone communication between Kawhia and various other parts of tbe district, and it is pleasing to note that the applications are likely to be given effect to. Mr Lang, M.H.B , forwards us the following letter on tbe subject which he has recently received “ Sir, —I have the honour to refer to tbe telegram to you of the 26th ultimo from Mr George Whitoombe, Kawhia, on the subject of the application for the extension of the telephone system to settlements on Kahia Harbour. In reply, I have to inform you that on the 18th ultimo a form of bond for a telephone line from Kawhia to Oparau was forwarded for execution to Mr G. H. Mackenzie, of Oparau. The Inspector of Auckland, was requested at the same time to ascertain what settlements were proposed tc be connected with the telephone line from Kawhia to Oparau, and to furnish a report 00 tbe application of tbe County Council fdA the establishing of telephone ■ at Oparau, Awaroa, Kiuohaku,l Te Ruu-a moa. Tbe position of toe matter at present is that tbe Department awaits replies from Mr Maoken> zie and ths Inspector of Telegraphs.— Yours, etc,. J. G. Ward. Postmasts General.”
