A similar fate betel the meeting of tbs Railway League, caused by the poor attendance. The mail did not arrive at Kawbia till about 9 p.m. on Friday night last, the delay being caused by the conveyance by which it wn carried getting stuck in a bad bole »u the road on the Pirongia side of Te liau a-ojoa. Being without telephonic communication the accident was not known at, consequently a certain amount of anxiety prevailed'. Whilst coming ncrosa tbo Poteka on Monday, Mr D’Arcy Hamilton had tbe misfortune to get his horse bogged at tbe same place where Mr Rose had such an unpleasant experience recently. Ex-Governor Francis, of Missouri, speaks as follows of the local paper : “ Each year the local paper gives from £5OO to £lOOO in fre-3 advertising space to tbe community in which it is located. No olber agency can or will do this. The editor, in proportion to bis means does more for a town than any 10 men. He ought te be supported, not because you like birn personally, or admire his writing, but because a local paper is the best nyestment a local people can make, It may not b? brilliantly edited or overcrowded with thoughts, but financially it is more benefit to the community than the teacher or the paeacber. Understand me, I do not mean morally or intellectually, but financially.”
AN INT. Breathes there a man with soul so dead, Who never to himself hath said, “ I’ll pay before I go to bed Than debt I owe the pr’ r.ter.” If such there be, go mark him well, No bell shall toll his funeral knell, And if he dies he’ll go to—well, A place where there’s no winter.
