JFIBST MEETING.
WEDNESDAY, JULY 12rn.
The first mealing of tbe newly formed County Council was held in Bcott’e Hall ou Wednesday last, when there were present —Ora. Babbage, Norton, Jonathan, Armstrong and H. Shaw. THE CHAIRMAN. Mr Whitcombe (acting clerk) took the chair, and asked for nominations for the position of chairman, which held good until the fourth week in Tovember. Cr Norton proposed that Or Bab hage be appointed Chairman. Or Babbage said that he would not have time to attend to the duties and proposed that Or M'Cardle be appointed to the position. Cr Armstrong seconded the motion. Cr Jonathan remarked that if Or M‘oardle were appointed he should be .able to fill the position right. He (thf speaker) bad heard tbit Or M‘oardlc would be again residing in Kawhia a< the eifd of the month. If Or M‘Oardle dntended to oppose Mr be ■would not b&ve much time io devote ■to the position. He would be happy ■to see Or M‘Cardfe in the chair, but if was likely to be away it would b< »etter to elect Cr Babbage. ■ Or Babbage thanked the council foi ■wishing him to bs chairman, but "stated that he could not accept the position, As he had neither time nor experience. They could not do better than elect Cr M'Oardle who had both the Sime and experience. He would not consent to accept tbe position. Or M‘oiirdle was duly elected chairman. whilst Cr Babbage wa-j elected chairman for the diy. COBKESPONDENOE. From Cr W. J. Shaw, stating that ho was sorry he would bo unable to attend the meeting on account of illhealtb, and if he could be of service in Auckland he would be plaised tact.—Received, and leave of abaene* for the meeting granted. From W. A. Gosling, secretary Ke whia Harbour Railway League, for warding petition for signature, and asking that the council advanee tbe matter as far as possible.—Received, the petition to be signed. DAY OF MEETING. The day of meeting was fixad on tba second Monday in eaeh month, at 8 p.m. .OFFICES. Th matter of arranging for offices and a building in which to hold tbe meetings was left in the hands of Ore Jonathan and M»Cardie. The would have to arrange to get an overdraft. In reply to a question, the Clerk said chat tbe rateable value of the 46280,488, -and if all the rates were curieotea ar TU in m' f in would moan £9OO, and £7OO at |d in the £. The Chairman: We cannot make roads with the rates. Cr H. Shaw : Let us get an overdraft as big as we can, and only use what amount is necessary. Cr Jonathan suggested that the Bank of New Zealand be approached and asked to establish a branch in Kawhia. They already owned a building section in the town. He had interviewed tbe manager of tbe bank at Te Awamutu on this matter before, but he did not like the idea of sending a man that distance with money iu his possession, as it was too risky. Tha Clerklt ‘ e >uld bs done by steamer. One man oould work Kawhia and Raglan. ' It was eventually decided that Cr W. J. Shaw be asked to interview the Bank of New Zealand relative to the overdraft. OTFIORBO. The Chairman : Will we arrange about a clerk now or at a later meeting? Cr Armstrong ' Arrange it now. Ci Jonathan said i;hat if they knew tbe amount of tteir inoc-me they would know what they eouid ajSbrd : but at the pressni they not able to do that Ha moved —“ That applications to invited for tbe position of clerk, applicants to atose salary required and previous expc 'ience, appli cations to close on Saturday, August 12th, and to be advertised in the Settler and RagUa Chronicle.” Seconded by Cr Armstrong and carried. STATIONERY. It was deeided to ask Cr W. Shaw to procure necessary hooks and stationery. Clerk suggested that a aopy of the Local Bodies Acts be got for each member, who would find the book very useful. EXPENSES. The Chairman said that the question of the expenses would have to be decided. They would have to do a lot of travelling and they ought to get paid for it. Cr Armstrong : We are entitled to a little. The expenses were heavy, to say nothing of the lost time. On the motion of Crs Norton and Armstrong the travelling allowance, was fixed at Is per mile. OFFICIAL ORGAN. Cr Jonathan moved and Cr H. Shaw; seconded—” That the Kawhia tler be appointed the official organ of the County Council.”—Carried. The Chairman remarked th/cHIRPTn? - of £20,000 had been set aside by the Government fir erecting telephone lines. They should apply for a share as they badly needed it. It was eventually decided—” That application be made to the Government for a grant to ereoW a telephone | line from Kawhia, ronn< <bo- harbour I to Te Maika and from Oparau to Te j Ehu-a-mua.”

Mr T. M. Stephens, representing the Morehead uarsery of New Plymouth, anuoußces that he will be pleased to receive orders for fruit trees, etc. If the Government have money to squander ot> au exhibition, why are io many reads stilt wanted iu tbe bnckblocks ?
