THE Kawhia Settler. FRIDAY, JUNE 23, 1905. KAWHIA HARBOUR RAILWAY.
We regretted to notice last week tha already a letter appeared in our col . umns showing a certain amount o feeling. We had hoped that tbi 1 would not be, as in the * matter of a railway unan : nLy ar essential. It matters not where th( * terminus of the proposed railway maj eventually be—we will rejoice if it it . ta ba ftt or near Kinohaku—as it will ba of great benefit to. the whole district, ;.nd we will pe as pleased '■> support t scheme as Hit came to our owia door. If at any other point, we hope that the portion of Kinohaku where dissatisfaction seems to exist (we are , assured by bona fide settlers of that district that the dissatisfaction on.y emanates from one individual) will join with us in forwarding the construction to the utmost of its ability. Nearly every ra way in New Zealand has been the subject of wire-pulling k and on that account diversions detrimental to the general good have been made. Let us for once try and avoid this. It is it 4 ra want.;. for, ttie vMliat benefit of any person in New i Zealand,, not for the aggrandisement r of Kawhia or Kinohaku or Oparau or j any other place in or about the harI bout, nor is it sole y for the benefit cf • this district, but that it may give j those places within a reasonable rad- ; ius of this grand haven the benefit of enjoying its advantages. Nor show d this be dillici U to attain. The outside cost of construing and putting rollirg stock and buddings on this line, e ren if it were to tap the Main Trunk Line higher up than anticipated, won ,d be under £200,000; but suppose it to be £260,000. Now, there is no line in New Zealand which pays two per cent, under the working expenses. A guarantee of £2500 for say five years would pay two per cent, on the cost, and although there is not the slightest of that guarantee being called upon, still if the residents in the district were to sign a guarantee of a pound or two each this could easily be raised, d it would show the Gov-, eminent u Air Seddon was not romancing when be spoke of a Kawhia Harbou" and Mi id Trunk Line connection. Thu laG Sir George Grey sard ha hoped he would live? tc see the dad when this radway was constructed! but with HI his wisdom he d dnoti know whu a diflk It thing it was for justice to U done when it clashed, with strong interests. We hope not only to live to See it an accomplished fact, bat that before two years have passed we w 1 see the sieam of tbe engines and hear their whistles from one of the saddles overlooking the., Kawhia Harbour. Again we say, pull together and rejoice with those who arc fortunate enough to gain the greatest benefit, nor Let jealously do what it has in the past—kept the whole f strict in the back ground, when ft ought to have beer be hading port in tLe West Cos" v . Oua Ute fellow townsman, Mr Theo. ■. We’ce is fairly on, tbe warpath and is mak- >g a good battle for the seat in Parliament against Mr Houston, M.H.B. (or the Biy of Island?. Mr Wake is nothing if be is not energetic, and he undoubtedly is a good man for what- he if? t fling at. Muring bjs stay in Kawhia be worked hard for the benefit of rhe placb. Through b.'j instrumenta ty the freights to this nor ,
were reduced, ahd many of the enter prises initiated owe their start to him. We hope he will be success fol in hie candidature, aud feet sure that the North has gained a good, hard working, energetic mon. We are sorry to notice that his political opponents are endeavouring to make capital out of the alleged house-breaking fiasco. Mr Wake rmpl y cleared h : nself of any criminality in t* nt case, and anyone might under the eiroumsta- ces have been drawn into an anomalous position through being wrongfully bipmed, as he was.
