Mr M‘Curdy, colonial organiser of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, walked from Pirongia to tbe Oparau Ferry in order to be able to address a meeting at Kawhia. Tbe jonrney, considering the bad state of tbe roads, was not a very enviable one. Meetings were held at Kawhia on Monday evening, and Oparau and Te Rau-a-moa on Tuesday. Owing to extreme pressure on our space a report is held over till next issue. There is great joy amongst the settlers of Awaroa just now, and the reason is not that that rising centre has been honoured by a .visit from tbe Royal Land Commission, though tbat in itself is an important matter. The cause of tbe elation is the fact tbat tbe bridge over the Kiamunga Creek has been at last completed, and Mr Humphreys cheerfully informed tbe Land Commission on Friday that be had tbat morning crossed it for tbe first time. The timber has been “ seasoning ” for 11 months' Mr J. E. Scott erected the structure in his usual workmanlike manner. Mr Theo. Wake, late of Kawhia, has commenced the campaign in connection with the Bay of Islands electorate, and from reports published seems to have made a favourable impression. Mr Wake is contesting the seat as a fair, independent and progressive candidate who would support measures, not men. In the coarse of an address at Monganui he stated tbat "Ihe time was rotten-ripe for a change. Pare, equitable, clean and honest administration mast eventuate. Tho present Tammany rale must go, end equal rights mast be meted oat to all, irrespective of political creed.” Sunday last was a day that will long be remembered by residents of this district as one of tbe roughest experienced for year? past. The wind blew with hurricane force all day, with some “ extra special ” squalls, whilst rain fell m torrents, not to mention a few hail storms which were very severe. A party of four settlers undert >ok to row from Kinohaku to Kawhia to obtain advice and medicine' for a resident who was suddenly taken seriously ill. Palling wns necessitated owing to the Kinohaka launch having met wiih a slight accident. The crew had a very exciting and danger jus experience. The wind was so strong that but little headway could be made, | whilst the sea was alpo particularly rough, and it whs only aftep four hours’ severe battling that Kawhia was safely reached. Tbe crew recognise that they were fortunate in arrive rug at their destination without thTbcat being swamped.
