We shall be pleased to procure seed from auy firm on a small commission, —Hinton & Hustler.—Advt.

Tbo February number of the Australian Hen is just to hand, and the issue is quite up to the usual standard of excellence. Messrs Jonathan Ltd. have received a’ large consignment of all lines of drapery. If yon cannot call send for samples and quotations.—Adyt,

Mr Pat. Quinlan, who is wellknown to many residents ot this district, announces in this issue that he has taken over the Thistle Hotel, in Queen street, Auckland, where he hopes to meet old and make new friends,

A rather peculiar, and no doubt painful, accident happened on board Mr A. Jourdain's launch oa Monday when the boat was just leaving the Oparau landing. A dog, which was accompanying one of the passengers, was seated in tba centre of the launch, when by some means or other its tail got around the shaft, with the result that that portion of the unfortunate animal was completely torn from the body. The canine suffered great agony but is still alive.

Extract from an exchange : “There is some likelihood of an experimental grape-growing station being estabHsbed.hy the Government at Hokanga. A large proportion of the laud north ef Auckland is suitable for grapegrowing?’ We would like to suggest that the Government officials pay a visit to Kawbia, and see the vines that grow on the shores of the harbour, after they have been allowed to grow -without attention for over 50 years, It would probably be then seen that it might be a wiser step to allow the land hereabouts (which is mostly held by natives) to be soid, so that vineries could be established, as it has been conclusively proved that this is an ideal place for grape-oultnre. This move would be far more beneficial to the industry and, need we add, less expensive to the country. For Children’s Hacking Cough at Night. Woods’ Great Peppermint Core. 1/8

The s.e. Muritai, in charge of Captain Stephenson, arrived at the Kewhia Heads on Saturday last at dead low water, with a cargo of 210 sheep, consigned to Messrs Brown, Stokes and W. Shaw, of Kinobeku. Mr W. Morgan there took oherge of the vessel and piloted her to Nathan's Point, on the Kinohoku side of the harbour, where the sheep were successfully landed. The Muritai left for Onehunga at 6 p.m. Great efforts are being made down the Kinohoku-Marakopa road by the aettlera to build bouse., but a “ win and thoughtful" Government have thought that now lands are to bo taken up and the so-called roads taken care of by an engineer who lives many miles away end therefore seldom sees them. This road is moat effectually blocked at the present time by a tree which it would lake two men five days to remove. Telegrams, etc., to the authorities have been of no avail. The settlers, after putting in several days at removing trees have had—and rightly so—quite enough of doing work, to pay for which their land is already loaded. It was thought that Mr Burd would have, been in the Kinohoku district recently,- in fact a wire was received to that, effect, but uo one knows What happened, for he never arrived—Contributed.

The sum of £5900, roughly speakingi<swpag ; put on to the last Estimates for -Toed-making, etc., in the surrounding-districts, but so far very little has bean expended. What has happened to the money ? has been the query from all around. At the close of the bush felling . Season there warp about 100 young active n.jn thrown out of employment, so that it the money voted for road-making was to hand they could have been employed to carry cut the works expeditiously, especially so seeing the* fine weather which has been experienced lately. The only reason why money is not now available, and will not be until the end of the financial year, is, wo suppose, io allow the Premier to indulge.in a few self satisfied platitudes and show a huge surplus at the settlers' cost and inconvenience. Now is the time to do repairs to roads; the inconvenience of having to cross roads during formation io the winter bas only to be experienced once to be appreciated (!). Daring the winter we never hear of a Goveruupmt supporter ever attempting each a thing, and we are equally certain that the Minister for PaHio Works will not, as he last wook completed hie journeys before the beginning of iho winter ’

The «... Kia Ora left Kawbia oa Tuesday lest at 6 p.m., takiog .quantity of goods for Jltutl 801 l Bros, and Bose, of Msrakopa, which waa surfed on to the beach during the night, . Wo have received an intimation from the Auckland Landa Office that a Urge block of land at Batanni, in the Kawbiadistrict,'will shortly be thrown open for selection. We would advise those iu search of good land to be on the alert, and watch for the advertisement in these columns. On Tuesday next, in the Kawhia Congregational Church, the Rev. Mr Davidson, of Auckland will deliver a lecture on the liquor question, which will be inteispsreed; with 'musical items. As the rev. lecturer waa a resident of Maungatorolo when a license was absolutely forced on that town, be is a person whose knowledge of the subject cannot be questioned. Mr Homer, formerly second steward on the M. Rawara, has been appointed chief*steward of the as. Kia Ora, and made his first trip to thia port on Tuesday last. Mr Homer comes with a splendid reputation, and we feel sure that he will soon make a boot of friends. Mr Homer is a brother-ir - law of Mr F. G. Crookes, who was school master at Kawbia some time ago. On Tuesday, March 18th, a very important meeting will be held in Scott’s Hall, Kawhia, under the auspices of the Kawbia Chamber of Commerce. The primary object of the meeting is to discuss matters in connection with our shipping facilities, which will have to be laid before Mt Ranson, Manager of the Northern S.S. Co., when be visits here shortly. Seeing how very important the subject of shipping is to the whole of the district, it behoves all who possibly can attend to be present. In order to suit th. convenience of settlers the time of the meeting has been fixed at 11 a.m.
