The Kawhia County.

The following is the copy of a peti lion drawn up at the suggestion of -the Oparau settlers, aud now being signed : f** We, the undersigned' residents of the Kawhia and Wai pa Counties, request that the boundary of the Kav whia and Waitomo Counties be so fixed that no portion of the KawhiaPirongia coach road will be placed under the control of the Waitomo

County, but so that the whole length of the road (with the exception of a small portion at the Pirongia end which is in the Raglan County) will remain in the Kawhia County, or, if feasible, be placed partly in the Waipa County and partly in the Kawhia County. The road connects Kawhia with the Waipa County, and the Waitomo district is not interested in it. The Te Rau-a-moa settlement, through which the road passes, and the portion of the road between Te Rau-a-moa and Kawhia fall inevitably into the Kawhia County, but it is understood that It is proposed to have the portion of the road between Te Bau-a-moa and Pirongia (with the exception of the small portion in the Raglan County) placed in the Waitomo County. Any Buch proposal would appear to proceed from individusJs who have immediate personal interests to serve at the expense of the permanent public interest. We, therefore, request that the boundary be so fixed as to keep the road (with the exception of the email portion in the Raglan County) under the control of one or both of the districts permanently interested in it, wia., Waipa and Kawbia. The retention in the Kawbia County, or, if feasible, the inclusion partly in the Kawhia County and partly in the Waipa County, of the road end the land naturally served by the road would create a satisfactory boundary.”
