Settlers who are in need of sheep to stock their holdings with, are reminded that Air Ala son, of Kawhia, has 50 cull ewes, and Messrs Turner and Brandon, of Awnron, have 120 4tooth breeding ewes and 30 fat lambs, for sale.
Evidence that the flix industry is being again commenced in the vicinity of Kawhia was noticed on Tuesday, when Mr Waiter Morgan*a launch towed a punt laden with green 11 «x from Oparau. The fibre was cut by Mr Wm. Morgan, aud is intended for Mr Langley’s mill at Pakoka, which is now running full time. In accordance with the suggestion offered by us last week, relative to inviting the Hon. James Carroll lo visit Kawhia, -Mr E. C. Falwaaser despatched the following wire to that' gentleman on Saturday last : M When do you visit Raglan ? Can you possibly make arrangements to visit Kawhia also ?” The following reply was received on Wednesday '* I cannot fix any date for being round your district, but will let you know by telegram my movements in that direction.”
Recently tenders wore called for altering the steps at the ond of the Kawhia Wharf, Only two firms tendered, vis., Messrs Muted and Son, £9 16s, and G. J. Howes, £8 sj, add that of ths latter was accepted. These eteps have been the cause of much irritation to the heads of the unwary; and as Bret Harte would say, caused language “ frequent aud painful and free.” The wharf trustees deserve great credit for their energy in meeting the wishes of the commercial public of Kawhia, as they have always done their best to carefully and judiciously lay out the funds which are received by them to the best possible advantage.
At some time or other (says the Ashhurst correspondent of the Manawatu Standard) we have read of cows in Scandinavia existing partially on a fish diet, and methinks some of the offspring of the said cows have found their way into the district, as one day recently the manager of a local creamery caught a fine crayfish in the mil It is a well-known fact that milk suppliers de not water the milk; but occasionally we hays beard of the cans being put into the creek to keep the milk cool, and possibly under such conditions the crayfish crawled into the can, or, as before suggested, some* one in this district may be experimenting with a Dex ter-Scandinavian Fish Diet Herd.
As a result of a controversy be-' tween several gentlemen in Te Arolia the other afternoon as to what was the record timofor killing and diessing sheep, cattle} pigs, etc., a wager was made between Mr James Prosser (of Mr Thomas Stanley’s butchery establishment, Te Aroha) and another that be (Prosser) could kill aud dress a sheep, fit for tbo Inudon market, in minutes. Mr Juo. Rowe was appointed judge, and tbo trial took place in the pros mco of about 20 spectators. Prosser, who got very flurried at the start, lost bis wager, bis time being 2min. 38secs. Not being satisfied with his first trial, Prosser made another attempt, and this timo succeeded in accomplishing the task in 2min. 22«ec.—a feat which bo has reason to be proud of. Mrs Perham, who has bad 200 aores of bush foiled on her rcpeutlyacquired section at Oparau, bad the misfortune to have the bush fired, be fore it was nearly ready, one day last week, and the cause of the aocidonj. (if it pan be called such) was tbo gross cwrelcssLoss of an individual, who lit a small patch of scrub in (bo vicinity and allowed the fire to spread on to Mrs Perham's property. The fire has, we believe, completely rained, the burn, as it merely singed about 00 acres of the centre. Thu balance Lad perforce to bo lighted, and the result is that tl;e work of felling baa been rendered useless. Needless to say, Mr Oscar Perham, who p re Biding on (he properly, has some very' hapd things to say about “ a fool being allowed rpatu about with a box of matches,” etc.

By the overland route on Tuesday last Mr aud Misa Nortboroft, Mr and Mrs Collins (Te Awamutu), aiod Swaranck (Hamilton), arrived in Kawhia, the occasion being the second sitting of the Kawhia Police Court. The party were favoured with ibeautifal weather for their journey, which was very much enjoyed by all. Ou Tuesday evening Mr and Miss Northcroft were taken for a trip by Mr W. Morgan in the launch Naumai to the now famous Rakauuui, aud expressed themselves as being highly delighted with the scenery of that pluce. On Wednesday they went to Kinohaku, and ou Thursday Mies Northciroft was taken to Awaroa. The party returned to the Waikato on Friday morning.
In the course of an address at a tea-meeting in connection vrith the opening of the new Okete Church (Riglau), the Bev. R. Mitchell, of Ka-' whia, compared ths churches of Raglan and Kawhia, aud the superior advantages that each possessed. Certainly the Raglan church wae bettor furnished than the one at Kawhia, but like the tailor they had to make their suit according to their cloth. In connection with the building of the Ka* whia Church, he had excavated and wheeled off a thousand barro w loads of earth himself, and though there had been nothing of the sort done at Okete he certainly would ad vine them, especially for the sake of aged friends who came there to worship, to make an easier road up to the church than the existing one. In conclusion he congratulated them qll on the good that had co'me out of the late fire. THE LONDON AND BERLIN PIANO COMPANY have foirwiuded to their Kawhia Agent a REVISED CODE of TERMS for payment of Pianos and Organs.
