Levying Distraint on Native Property.

Constable M’Carthy, of Ragiu, had quite an exciting time of it ia the discharge of hie doty at Patflozu, oa tbe Te Aku side of the Begin Harbour, one day last week. He went there ia his capacity nt bailiff of the soar* te distrain on property owned by a native named Ronga, te meet a judgmeei

issued by tbe Stipendiary in the case Galvan Benge, and wan adeompanied by Messrs M. Galena, T. Brown and A. Gilmour, tbe letter being engaged as interpreter. After considerable trouble, owing to the interfehnse of the natives, a pair nt horses which looked like res tiring sufficient to meet the claim ware “ rounded up,” but when u atiampt was made to catch them Bonn’s wife, who asserted that they were her property, became incensed and suede several hostile demonstrations against the constable with a knife. The interpreter fully explained the position of affairs and tha constable remonstrated with her for bar conduct, but all to no avail, for the Muri wonun had " got her dander up '* to snob am extent that Mr M’Carthy’e podtion soon became decidedly dangerous, and he had io exercise oonaidanible activity to dodge the blows aimed at hint with the steel blade by the ireta wahina. Eventually it was found neaescery to produce a pair of handcuffs and a tn- < volver to intimidate tbe women, and these having the deaired affect tha horses were brought to Baglu. We understand that tha case is likely to result in further litigation.—Chronicle
