A Big Sheep Deal.
On Wednesday Mr Chitty, of the Waikato, paid s visit to Kawhia, and made a big sheep deal, purchasing pearly the whole of Mr Mason's flock, viz., 1200, which comprised freezing wethers and ewes and lambs.* The former were bought for the Auckland Freezing Company, the price paid being 17s per "head. The purchaser speaks in high terms of this line, saying that they are the bent lie has bandied for seme lime, and ha estimates they will average 70lbs. when dressed. Mr Mason baft now only about 50 culls left, which are xdver-, tised in this issue as being also for sate. The reason that Mr Mason wants to make a clean sweep of his flock u thaL he may re-stock with a more e\en line, and for that purpose intends proceeding to Hawkes Bay. Mr Mason informs us that ths sheep will be driven overland, as he finds from experience that it is much cheaper than shipping. This is a strange state of affairs, ae the journey to the railway is 44 miles, where the stock will have to be entrained for Auckland, whereas the yards where the sheep changed hands are within half*a>mile of the Kawhia wharf, from which a steamdr runs every week for Onebunga. The cost to land sheep at Onehunga from Kawhia is Is 8d per head, which local farmers consider prohibitive. The Northern 8.8. , Co. will not lower their freights, conse* j quently, as Mr Mason has sold 1700 j sheep ibis year himself, they .have lost j £9O in freight from him alone.
