He hanga whakaora te ahi, he hanga whakamate te ahi. Mawai e whakaaro nga whiu o te ahi, kite whakapungarehu ite taonga ite tinana tangata. Me aha koia ? Ka pa i tikina atu e te tangata hei whiu ano i a ia; tena ko tenei, i aurara noa mai a aitua ki nga owha o te iwi Maori, ara ki a Te Matiu ratou ko tana whanau. Engari koa, ko te tangata i ora, ko te whare i mate. Ko te whakaaroha kaore e taea te pehi i runga i enei tu mate. Tenei te kupu tuku mai mo taua whare-toro :—" No te 30 o nga ra o Oketopai i toro ai te whare o te minita o Kaitaia. Ka nui te aroha o nga Pakeha me nga Maori ki a te Matiu raua ko Mata mo tenei mate nui. No te orokonohoanga a te Matiu ki Kaitaia i hanga ai taua whare e tata ana kite 50 tau."
