CARRIERS' LICENSES.
UPKEEP OF ROADS. BY-LAW TO BE ENFORCED. The question of carriers' licenses in the county has frequently been dia cussed, and point was given to the matter at Monday evening's meeting of the Waitomo County Council' by Cr Willis, who drew attention to the necessity of strictly enforcing the by-law concerning vehicle licenses now that ihe roads were getting metalled. He admitted the carriage of cream to the railway presented a difficulty.. '
Cr Potts said he thought cream waggons should be exempt. If the settlers were to cart their cream individually the wear and tear on the roads would bd much greater. He suggested that cream carriers should be exempt up to a certain load in respect to back-loading. Cr Johnston said he considered the exemption of anyone would be dangerous It was customary for cream carriers to regularly carry goods for the settlers. The chairman pointed out that nothing could be done in the face of the by-law w.iich provided for the licensing of all carriers. In order to exempt anyone the by-law would have to be rescinded. The Council had exercised discretion in the collection of the licenses in the past and could continue to do so. At the same time it was advisable to have the by-laws amended, and it was proposed to do this at an early date with a view to providing for the adequate needs of the settlers.
