POLITICAL SITUATION.
A HEAVY FOLL GOVERNMENT CANDIDATE % LEADS A great deal of interest was taken in the Dunedin Central by-election on Wednesday. The weather was fine until late in the afternoon, when rain fell for a time. The total number of names on the roll was' 9415, and 7669 valid votes were cast, as against 7398 at the general election in December. Large crowds congregated in front of the newspaper offices awaiting the result, which was finally announced as follows: — € E Statham, Government ; 3843 J W Munro, Labour 3825 Majority for Statham 18 The number of "absent votes" to come is 224, and the ssamen's votes total 35. The absent votes are scattered all over the Dominion, and it is probable that the result of the election will not be definitely known for a few days.
