DISPUTED METAL RESERVE.
INDIGNANT.ARIA MAORIS NATIVES OBSTRUCT CONTRACTOR The dispute between the natives at Aria and the Wa'tomo County Council concerning the taking of a limestone reserve for metalling purposes its still undecided. The reserve of two acreß was duly taken by the Council under the provisions of the Public Works Act, but when a start wbb made to open up the quarry the natives appeared in force and claimed that the area was reserved as v.n old Maori burial place. The assistance of the police was requisitioned, but the natives prepared to contest ihe entrance to the reserve by force. The reserve is of considerable value to the Council inasmuch us it is the only limestone quarry in that part of the district, and it was intended to metal most of the roada in the locality from it. A further effort is to be made to bring the natives to reason, and a party from the Council intends proceeding to Aria on Monday to enter into diplomatic negotiations with a view to effecting a settlement which will be suitable to both parties.
