DEVELOPING THE DISTRICT.

OPENING KAWA BRIDGE. THE OFFICIAL CEREMONY. The official opening of the bridge oyer the Waipa river at Kawa, was regarded as a red-letter day by the settlers, and a large number attended the ceremony, which was performed yesterday. Arrangements had been made by the Waitomo County Council and the Hon. W. H. Herries, Minister of Railways and Native Affairs; motored through from Hamilton to represent the Government at the function. The Minister was accompanied by Mr 3. A. Young, member for Waikato, and upon arriving at. Kawa station a deputation waited on Mr Herries to bring before his notfce the requirements of the railway etation. Messrs J. B. Teasdale and G. Kay made urgent representations and pointed out the imperative need of further facilities in order to serve the district properly. The Minister, in reply, said it was apparent the progress of the district warranted the extensions and the matter would be attended to a? soon as possible. Tha party then set out for the bridge, which is about four miles from the station, and arrived there shortly after mid-day. Among the large number who assembled to take part in the proceedings were Mr J. A. Young, member for Waikato; Mr W. T. Jennings, member for Taumarunui; Mr C. K. Wilson, Messrs A. Schole3, chairman, T. Potts, G. Berry, and P. D. Smyth, members of the Waitomo County Council; P. .Mora, clerk, and E. R. Gould, engineer, J. Ormsby, chairman Otorohanga Town Council. Speeches were made by the Hon. Mr Herries, Messrs Young and Jennings, M's.P., C.' K. Wilson, A. Scholes, T. Potts, J. Orn-sby, and Culverhouse. The ceremony of cutting the ribbon was performed by Mrs George Kay, and the bridge was formally declared open, by the Minister. The gathering was of a most enthusiastic nature, the settlers realising the importance of the bridge to the whole district.
