ALLIES RECORD PROGRESS
ARTILLERY SUPERIOR TO GERMAN.
Wellington, Friday.
Ihe Prima Minister ha 3 received the following from the High Commissioner, dated London, January 21st: — Paris reports that in the Champagne, east of Rheims. the Allies demolished German works in the region of Proanes les Marquisea and Moronvillea, obliging the evacuation of trenches by the enemy, and exploding an ammunition depot. South-west of Beau se Jour the Allies progressed, capturing by surprise and occupying three posts in the Forest of Aprnmont. South-west of St. Mihiel they carried 150 metres of German trenches and repulsed a counter-attack.
North-west of Pont-a-Mousson and Bois le Pretra the enemy's counterattacks resulted in the recaptue of 20 of 500 metres of trenches carried on previous days. The Allies are solidly holding the entire position. Advantageous artillery duels have been general, but progress is slow owing to the difficult ground.
