TE KUITI BOROUGH COUNCIL.
An ordinary meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present his Worship the Mayor, Crs M. J. Jones, Martin, Somerville, Howartb, and Griham. Leave of absence was granted to Cr Mostyn Jones. The Mayor extended tbe season's greetings to the councillors on the occasion of the first meeting in tbe New Year.
Government' Subsidy.—The Prime Minister wrote acknowledging receipt of the motion passed by the Council thanking the Government for the subsidy of £2OOO for river deviation and bridge construction.—-Re-
ceived. Auditor-General. The Auditor- ' General wrote stating the Council's action in borrowing £2OOO for the purpose of repaying amounts to Sundry Loan accounts met with his ap proval.—Received. Railway Water Supply.—The De-
partment wrote with respect to a -.water supply for the railway, including a supply for electrical plant.— The, clerk stated he understood the Department -was willing to pay for the water at the rate of 6d per gallon.
Hinerangi Street Drainage.—Mr J. Sutherland wrote asking for a drainage connection. Referred to the Works Committee. - _ Elizabeth Street.—Mra F. Conway Jones wrote asking that a footpath be formed in Eilzafaeth street.—Referred to Works Committse. Noxious Weeds. —A circular tetter
was received fiom the President of
the Board of Agriculture in respect to noxious weeds in the district. —Cr Somerville said he would like tu see a sub-committea appointed to cooperate with the Waitnma County Council in forwarding a report to the Board. The're was a good deal of Californian thistle in the district, and in reporting together he thought the local bodies would be doing better than by sending separate reports.— The Mayor and Cr Somerville were appointed a sub-committee to deal With tje matter.
Auctioneers' Licenses. —Mr J. R. Graham and Messrs Mackay and Jonas applied for renewal of their auctioneer's licenses. —Granted.
The following report of tha Works, Water, and Drainage Committee was received and adopted:—That six photographs of the tar macadam plant be procured and one forwarded to the Wellington City Council: that the drain in Seddon street be roughly cleaned out; that Mr A. E. Robinson be requested to improve the rough steps leading from the road in Edward street to his section by fixing wooden hand-rails down each side and 3 by 2into be scribed under each tread, the work to be done to tha satisfaction of the Borough foreman; that an extension of the water main along View road be undertaken forthwith. a 4in main to be laid from the foot of Mangaorinb road up View road, a distance of 16 chains, end from that .point a liin main laid as far as Mr Wm. Starnes' house. The cost of the 4in main will bs approximately £2OO which material the Council have already in stock, cost of laying main £lO, cost of ljin main laid £SO, total cost £260, the amount of revenue from Water rates off the properties affected will be approximately £3O per annum; that as there are no further applications before the Council for additional water extensions, the Committee have no recommendation ta make in this direction; that the foreman be instructed to repair a portion of the Te Kumi road leading to the Borough quarry, a distance of three or four chains; that the Te Kniti Co-oparative Dairy Co. be supplied with 12 yards of crushed metal, more or less, at 4s 6d per yard in the qaariy; the Committee report—Having inspected H. H. Metcalfe and Sons' plan and specification of proposed bridge and instructed the town clerk to forward same to the District Public Works Engineer for approval; having approved of the Borough foreman's plan of house drainage at Dr Zobel's property, Jennings' street, arid authorised tenders to be called for the work and the necessary money advanced to Dr Zobel; that tha George streeet footpath opposite Mrs Ferguson's property has now been repaired. Assistant Electrical Engineer.—The electrical engineer reported that the assistant electrical engineer had gone away leaving a vacancy in the staff. Referred to the Electrical Committee to deal with.
Foreman's Report.— Maintenance: paring the month the ordinary work in connection with the Borough has been carried out. The outsida roads are being attended to, and holes found in them filled up. The water tables .in the Borough are being looked jjKter and cleaned out as time perBits. Several footpaths whtre the has grown up, and made the Baths bad in wet weather, have been cleaned, including George street. Thhere are a lot of paths bad yet With grass, which will be cleared as soon as. possible.—Rora Street Breastwork: Careful attention is being paid to this, and so far since last meeting no further damage has occurred. —Quarrying, Te Kumi: Crushing metal at the quarry has been a little broken this month owing to Christmas holidays. However, the crusher Was kept going when possible, everything working satisfactorily—Sewers: These are being carefully attended to, being flushed out every week and kept in a clean condition. The sewerage connections for the railway are proceeding very satisfacotrily, and should be completed at an early date. —Rora Street: Metalling is now being carried out in this street to complete the portion of the road from Alexandra street to the school, and should be completed in about a week's time Aa the weather now looks settied a start will be made as soon as possible to lay down the remainder of the tarred macadam on band.—Awa"kino Road: Metalling 9 }^J^
this road, and to date a distance of eight chains has been completed.— Waterworks: An inspection of the pipe line and dam at Waiteti was made on January 4th, everything found satisfactory. A small fence which was broken whan the main burst last time, has also been repaired —T. Dix, Foreman. Electrical Engineer's Report.—Applications for Supply:"The applications registered during the month are two and the connections made to the mains one, making the total applications registered to date 252, and those connected to the mains 220.—Units Sold During tin Month: The units sold during the month aie 5296, showing a considerable decrease on last month's working. This decrease is due to a great part of the month being holiday time, and many consumers not requiring the supply.—lnterruptions in Supply: The supply was inter-. rupt9d for about forty minutes on Christmas Eve, due to a breakdown in the engine magneto, which trouble was located and repaired as quickly as possible, and the plant-iga.in started. —Mains and Net-work: Little has been done to this part of the plant during the month- with the exception of repairing the lines damaged by the gales, and re-straining some of the pole stays and cradles. —Producer Plant: The installation of"the nsw gas producer plant is completed, and was run* for the/-first time en January 6th, 1915. Poundkeepsr's Report.—The number of animals impounded from the Ist to 31st of December and fees collected for- same a,r3 a3 follows: Horses impounded and released 26, cattle 7 total 33; fees received for above £6 8s 6d, sale of beast £2 10s 6d. Dog tax fees received 10*. Fees collected for garden hose taps £7 10s; total feeß collected, £l6 19s. Sanitary Matters: Several small nuisances have .been rectified during tbe month, and as far as I can see things gsnerfairly satisfactory.—G. H. Yeates, Poundkeeper.
