RUSSIA'S GREAT VICTORY.
OVER THE TUSKS
GERMAN GENERALS OUTMANOEUVRED BY RUSSIAN STAFF. Petrograd, Thursday. The Turks in the Caucasus fought bravely under German orders, but the Russian leaders outmanoeuvred the Germans, who planned the battle on their favourite text-book tactics and fell into a trap resembling that at Brcsiny at the end of November,
The German idea wag to rest one wing on the Erzeroum fortress, and awing the other flank- for the envelopment. The direction of the .turning : movement was long kept secret.
The German generals reduced the transport to a minimum, and swiftly advanceud two main bodies, one marching on Sarykamisb, while the other crossed the frontier at Artvine, rear the Black Sea coast, and occupied Ardagan, in Trans-Caucasia, with mountains in the rear. ■.' *■! The Russians made a timely discovery of the move on Ardagan, and posted a strong force against the left wing and" also between the wing and trie centre. The Turks losaes were appalling. The dead and wounded lie on the ground for miles in the narrow valleys, and the mountain roads &re dotted with frozen corpses, the ground being too hard for burial. The dead are being cremated in heaps. The/Russian pursuit was terribly arduous, and it was unreasonable to expect too much, even for seasoned troops. The prisoners were obliged to sleep with cattle for warmth. The prisoners include the Austrian staff and Izzst Pasha, ex-Minister for War.
