Soldiers' letters recount that English and Germans fraternised in several points on Christmas Eve. They ceaßed firing, left the trenches, met in the open and exchanged souvenirs, wine, chocolates, and puddings. •,"•«■ Two regiments established an informal armistice, and spent Christmas. Day without hostility. At night Germans from the.trenches shouted: "Englishmen, sing to us," and cheered the "Tommies" when they sang "While Shepherds Watched," "Lead, Kindly Light," and "Abide With Me." ~.,..
