The officers from Admiral Sturdee's fleet have supplied further particulars of the Falkland Islands engagement When the battle began the Germans fired at long range. . The British reserved their fire, permitting the crews to breakfast before pursuing. When the Gneisenau sunk she had exhausted her ammunition, but refused to surrender, the officers and crew standing on the decks singing patriotic songs when she took the plunge. Many of the crew died after being rescued. The Scharnhorst was ablaze when she sank with all han.is. including Admiral Von Sp:e and his two sons.
