NAVAL DISASTER IN SHEERNESS.
H.M.S. BULWARK BLOWN UP
EXPLOSION IN MAGAZINE. 768 MEN KILLED. _ Lonaon, Thursday. It is officially announced that H.M.S. Bulwark, a pre-Dreadnought battleship of 15,000,t0n5, was blown up in Sheernesa Harbour at''B o'clock this morning. It is believed,that the disaster was due to an explosion in the magazine. Only 12 were saved out of the 780 men aboard the ship. Mr Winston Churchill, First Lord of tha Admiralty, in announcing the disaster in the House of Commons, said the Admiralty was convinced the warship's magazine had exploded and rent the ship'asunder." There was no upheaval of the water such.as would have followed the explosion of a torpedo outside the vessel's hull.
The Bulwark '.had; entirely disappeared when ..the smoke, cleared. Mr Churchill added that the loss had not sensibly affected the military position, but/tjie loss of 1 If/''was very eevere. v ' '
The Bulwark disappsarad in thr?e minutes. The explosion shook every building in the vicinity; and some tli9 debris was lhrujam*.a ..distance of six miles. [
The concussion was felt at Southend, seven miles away, across the Thames estuary. Dsnse clouds of smoke arose across the estuary of the Thames.
